At the airport.......
Last night, I flew out of Laguardia airport to meet with some clients in Detroit. As I was going through the TSA metal detector screening process, I asked if I should remove my watch prior to screening. The TSA agent advised that if the watch is a genuine Rolex it will set off the metal detectors (not sure how he spotted my Sub from 30 feet). Jokingly, I told him it was a fake and proceeded through the detector.
To my surprise, the detector did not go off. Mind you, I have not travelled with my watch before. Should this occurance cast doubt that my watch may not be genuine or the TSA agent is just a moron I did buy the watch from very reputable TRF member and have no doubts that it is real.

My Rolex has never set off any detector. The TSA person had it wrong. Only the fakes will set it off...

Thanks Frank, he did look like a tool
But then again it did make me think to my self....hmmm the watch is stainless steel and I bet they screen for steel objects (i.e. hand guns)

DUDE!!! I work in a company that design and built those metal detector. The TSA agent is right. The Metal Detector should have gone off if in fact your Rolex is real. You'd better have RSC check that watch of yours. (don't know anything about metal detector) from one bike rider to another

I've never taken my watch off for TSA and have never been asked, never had a problem. Interestingly my wife was asked to take her watch off to be screened for the Statue of Liberty, the screener told her that gold watches will set of the alarm.

So, does this mean that the TSA guy is wrong or all your watches are fakes?
I have worn my GV, Daytona SS, Pepsi and GMT II TTc through detectors in the past few months and have never set one off. Better whip the backs off and have a look...hang on...I have already done that.

My GMT didn't trip the metal detector at SFO last month, and it's about the same size as your sub. Interestingly, I have a belt that always does.

I thought any watch with metal content would set off a detector?

Each metal detector is different. I've gone through a detector at JFK in the morning with no problem, and then set one off in LGB later that day, wearing the same clothes and watch. It can be infuriating.

As a frequent traveler, mine has never set the metal detector off.
Magnetometers do have variable settings of sensitivity. The TSA, I am sure, has a setting that they mandate the device to be on. Most allow a small amount of metal to go through without activating (forgotten coins, wedding rings, watches, eyeglasses). Some things that look 'metal' are actually alloys that don't set it off either (belt buckles). I don't think I would use a metal detector to determine whether my watch is a rolex or a folex. Your AD and watch expert know more than the TSA screener. Almost everybody does. If it sounds the alarm, next time place it in your carryon or briefcase before going through the line and put it back on afterward. |

Never take off and put your Rolex in baggage that goes through the x-ray. Or anyplace else for that matter. The only thing that happens if the big machine goes off because of rivets on your jeans or what have you is they'll pass the wand over you (including your watch). This has happened to me on occasion and they simply look at the watch to see the second hand is indeed moving (may not work on a Daytona however). Much the same as them confirming that discmans actually work. Don't put it in your pocket, your shoe or anyplace else - JUST WEAR IT - and have a good trip. [

This is not true. I travel every week and go through security @ Cancun, Miami, Mexico City, Houston, Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and so on. Sometimes it sets it off, sometimes it does not. There is no pattern, just how 'sensitive' they set the detector that morning. Same airport, same detector, different day I can go through with my watch and belt, no porblem; next morning, even the small metal strip in my wallet sets it off.
Enjoy life! |

My SD set off the detector at Heathrow, but the guy just wanded it then did some heavy petting. I still feel violated.
