Vote For Your Favorite Comedian

While this is by no means an all inclusive list, I've listed some popular comedians. Please vote for your favorite and you also might want to mention which of his or her works in particular you would recommend as showcasing the pinnacle of that person's talent.

Robin WIlliams, I don't really think of Jim Carrey as a comedian, more a movie actor. Also, you could add to the list (if you want to make this a more international thing) From Scotland the excellent Billy Connelly, or Australia's Kevin Bloody Wilson as they have a larger internation audience. The one thing with your list is that some of them are not known outside of North America!

My perception of Jim Carrey is that he is a comedian who puts his comedic talents in movies, not stand-up. As I said, the list isn't all-inclusive and I'm not really familiar with many comedians outside of the U.S. On a more personal note, I am torn between Letterman and Martin - love them both and hard to choose. (I also loved Rickles many years ago.)

My parents and I always watch George Carlin when they play his re-runs on HBO.
He was also very popular in the 1970's. IMO, one of THE best comedians of all time.
RIP George Carlin !!

I love George Carlin and Robin Williams! But my dad always used to say that a comedian should be able to make you laugh without profanity, so I respectfully nominate Bill Cosby as my true favorite, and his show "Himself" is the funniest show I have ever seen.

Red Skelton and Benny Hill are also favorites of my father and comedians I enjoy watching. Eddie Izzard is also a guilty pleasure!

Bill Cosby is great and I still watch his reruns whenever possible. Your dad had a point so I'd keep him away from Carlin's material and also from Andrew Dice Clay. Carlin was at least highly intelligent whereas Dice Clay is simply gross!

Soo true with Carlin! He is so fun to watch! I dislike Dice Clay, he comes off too cocky.

Unfortunately, my dad passed away in 2000, it's funny how much I enjoy so many of the books, comedians, shows that he always loved. The Blue collar comedy tour guys are pretty funny also.

Good topic!!!

Tough choice, one I can't answer.

However, I can tell you I have met Jim Carrey twice, and I promise he is without a doubt one of the nicest celebrities I have ever met.

As for Bill Cosby, I met him too and I have no comment.

Primate Boy, how did you meet Jim Carrey? As far as Bill Cosby is concerned, he is a fellow Philadelphian, and I've met others who have also met him and my sense is they felt very similar to you.

First time I met Jim Carrey was at a Kings vs. Ducks game. He was there with his little girl (she was little at the time; it was 12 or 13 years ago). He could not have been nicer, indulging every request for an autograph or handshake whenever anyone approached.

While we were with him, he was also a wonderful father. Overall, he seemed very genuine and kind and treated his little girl like gold.

With all due respect...none of the above...not even close. Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Dave Chappelle, Red Foxx. Robin Williams may be the most non-funny person on the planet (nano-nano).

I take my statement back a little. Carlin is a legend in standup. Martin is a classic scetch guy. Sarah Silverman is awesome. You could not pay me to see the rest of them.

Interesting . .

I would have to agree with your assessment of Robin Williams. He seems to be a polarizing figure. When I watch his movies, I actual feel uncomfortable with how "not funny" he is. Just my two cents, of course.

I believe you just added it. There were only so many options I could list, and frankly, Jerry Seinfeld was on my list, but I copied everything so quickly, I'm afraid he got lost.

If a particular comedian strikes your fancy, he or she certainly doesn't have to be on the list to discuss that person.

Good catch....very funny indeed. The thing about comedy is that it is sooo subjective.

Hi Harvey,

I listened to his skit all the way through, and my sense is people like him because most (men in particular) would find him an easy person to relate to, and he also looks like a typical guy. While he does curse, he isn't gross (which is what I find intolerable in Dice Clay). Thanks for your post.

My two favorite people on the planet who have me consistently in stitches is Kelsey Grammer as Frasier, and David Hyde Pierce, who plays Niles, Frasier's brothers. Two pompous and insecure psychiatrists who are guaranteed to make anyone smile. (Let's also not forget about Eddie, the trusty and beloved Jack Russell belonging to their father .)

thanks for the poll!

Glad to see I'm in sync with my fellow TRFrs with a dead heat developing between George Carlin and Sarah Silverman...I voted Sarah...that "Jesus is magic" special was too funny (and she's better lookin' than George Carlin!).

Alas, my poor favorite Rodney Dangerfield not included for vote...Still "NO RESPECT?!"
