Bought my first Rolex there in '73 or 4. It kept the best time of all my watches.

Not any recommendation. But I will share my experience. I was there in August. Visited 17-18 AD's. Came back empty handed. So many AD's there, you can literally get rejected by 3 AD's in a span of 30 mins. No exaggerations, stand at the corner of Pedder St and Queens Rd Central, do a 360 and you can spot the Rolex signs from 3 AD's, all within 50 yards. Same with Causeway Bay or Nathan Rd. I am going to guess that no other market has this concentration of AD's.
If you are a Mainlander, you might have a shot. Whales of HK now. You'd think there's always a Black Friday sale going on when you see a Chinese Mainlander tourist doing a shopping spree. I walked into an AD in one of the fanciest hotels in Kowloon. As I was walking in I was probably speaking to my kids, in English. So the SA greeted me in English, and I spoke English the whole time. The SA probably didn't think I understands Mandarin (For context, Hong Kong locals mostly speak Cantonese, and Chinese Mainlanders mostly speak Mandarin). There was one Mainlander tourist there, behind the sliding door, which many AD's now have, I can hear the SA "shouting" in Mandarin to his assistant to "get this Daytona, and that Daytona out of the safe." while his colleague is telling me they have nothing in stock... I suppose if you walk in and flat out tell them you'd buy anything, you'll get something. But if you lead with "Do you have this model... or that model..?" The AD's will sell you nothing. |

I hear the dealers in HK are completely out to lunch with their prices. Wouldn’t be looking to buy anything there, but lots and lots and lots of vintage shops in Kowloon. Great to have a look!

1) Great to have a look <--- yes, absolutely.
2) Buy a sports model at RRP <--- no, literally impossible. 3) Pay rich premium for a desired model <--- Definitely as long as you are willing to pay a rich premium. |

Prices are high there but the number of watches in the many stores will blow you away.

Are you looking for new or pre owned? Some great pre owned shops if you’re in the market for a vintage watch

Go preowned in HK, they have some of the best prices worldwide. You can get some sports model under or close to retail.
Try Sino center and Dundas st in Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po district, also TST has loads nicer shops but generally more expensive. Remember to haggle on the sticker price, usually get another 5-10% off. I picked up a 16610LV Kermit in HK last month in amazing condition for a great price I thought. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
