I think I have the perfect collection, and I’m still thinking about the next one.Help!

I’ve consolidated down to a Daytona C White, Pepsi C on Jubilee, the Cermit Mk 2 and an Ed White 321, each covering the exploratory domains of Land, Air, Sea and Space. For me, this is an ideal collection, the one I had envisioned at the beginning of the journey.

And now once I’m here, while a glance at the wrist still does fill me with pride, I’m still thinking about the next one, still thinking of whether I should trade an existing piece for a Lange, thinking of trading the the Pepsi for a Black Daytona C. It’s always the search for the next Dopamine Hit. Folks that got to a collection they’re happy with, how did you avoid thinking of the next one?

A extreme solution to this is to withdraw completely. No forums. No watching reviews. No Instagram. I feel like this would be too draconian. The reason why I got into watches was the mechanical wizardry in the back: the rotors, the balance wheels, the types of screws, and admiring it all come together into this wondrous analogue thing on my wrist. Ironically, it’s only the 321 that provides this. It’s a source of happiness for me and I don’t want to let it go. Curious to here thoughts on what’s the middle ground?

Got to agree, that's a superb collection. Just needs something dressy in addition.

It may help to realize that it is ok to admire and appreciate a watch you see online without the need to hoard it.

You can only wear one at a time.

I have a similar collection and went through a process of downsizing this past year.

Too many watches made me feel anxious at times. I’m not sure anxious is the right word, but I always felt like I should have been wearing them equally or more often than I was.

I took my time and gradually decided which ones I enjoyed the most, and reasoned why I might keep certain ones over others (mostly comfort, and practical reasons but horological significance played a role too).

I landed on the 321, BLRO, and Submariner.

I tell myself I’m never going to add a watch again without moving one of these three. We shall see if it works

Having about 80 watches myself from Patek to fashion watches has been a curse in a way for me.

My own situation is to have less available cash, by restricting access to cash by putting other needs or savings or other investments.

One way of saving is that last 4 watches I split 50/50 with my best buddy if of 40 years. We are like family and so easy to take turns with them as we leave nearby and handle our pieces with care, etc and have so many watches that it helps with rotations etc.

Sometimes I feel do I need 3 Day Dates ( one in each gold color?)

Should I sell those i wear the least?

I have sold a few, traded, yet I still get the itch.

Currently my itch would required selling a few to add something like a VC overseas all gold blue dial, or trading my steel Acquanaut for a rose gold version?

My collection is such for me, that best part currently I only want a Cartier steel tank with diamonds on bezel/track,
but it would required selling something… as can’t seem adding more but switching to more gold pieces only ?

Suggestion yes cut of social media….try it!

My way of achieving peace of mind, or a sense of rightness (if you will), when getting yet another watch that has made itself into my brain rent free on a permanent basis; is to move one of the pieces that I have, before the new acquisition. Typically, the one to go via sale or trade, is the timepiece that for some reason or another; gets the least wrist time or, has made his way into the bottom of my watch happiness totem pole.

What about adding a day-date? I'd pick the classic size, 36mm

Perfect collection as is. I would trade the Starbucks for a Hulk if any change.

What worked for me was realizing that being a fan of watches is about following and engaging with the collecting and owning journey of others, not just making changes in my own collection. I also established a firm 4 watch max rule.

That’s a solid collection. Really no need to add anything. If it was me, I’d wait for some type of personal milestone and add a DD or PM Daytona as you seem to prefer chronos.

Or you could just log off and spend the money on some other interest which it sounds like might be the better option.

Enjoy what you have and acknowledge the thrill of the chase has nothing to do with contentment of your collection. It’s a slippery slope and much like being addicted to gambling.

It is all about having fun and owning the watches I want, and can afford. Like so many things I believe that watch collecting is full of all types of people that share some characteristics. Our hobby lends itself to overthinking and self doubt. So many options at so many different levels it can become confusing. Part of the fun for me is to reasonably go with what I like and will wear. I will also buy/sell/trade at the drop of a hat if something catches my eye. I have consolidated, expanded and stayed the same many times and will probably do it again many times. This to say, no right or wrong answers, only what is right or wrong for us.

DD 40 and a 1908
Those two alone would be a fine collection.

Trading the BLRO for a Daytona… ahhhh. I personally wouldn’t do that.

I notice you posted dozens of threads asking members here what you should buy since last April, but I don't see any pics of your perfect collection. Can we see it?

While you don't have to withdraw completely from life as we watch nerds know it, you do have to come to terms with the fact there is a point where more may be more, but it's not necessarily better. Or, at the very least, does not give us a reasonable bang for the buck.

It's a process. Your best bet is to focus on what you have, not on what you don't. Good luck,

You need a dress watch not necessarily another Daytona. I would keep the Pepsi. You have what you wanted. Get a dressy watch and call it a day.

A blue dial Vacheron 4520 would, in my option, be very complementary to what you have. Its an amazing watch for a number of reasons (high horology, beautiful finishing/movement, comes with multiple bracelet/strap combinations). Available in stainless and rose gold. Not particularly easy to get, but that doesn't seem to be a problem for you :-)

It's a sickness this hobby of ours.
For me what helped me is: being grateful and content for what I have and reducing watch related content.
And yes indeed, you do have a great collection of one of the most sought after sport steel pieces.
