Will a dent on the bezel decrease my watch value

Hi there,

I'm wondering if a dent on my Submariner bezel will decrease its resale value, and if the watch service will be able to fix a dent like this?

The short answer is yes, it would affect what you could get for your watch. If I were looking to sell, I’d weigh the cost of replacing the bezel vs. the price I would get for the watch as is.

As an aside, private sellers often over estimate what they can get in the secondary market for a watch. Set realistic expectations.

Condition will always affect resale value. That's a minor ding and not sure it would be worth replacing the bezel.

Have to agree that extremely miniscule dent that even with the high magnification with my old eyes had a job to see not worth worrying or bothering about.

Welcome to the forum.

A buyer will use any reason to reduce their cost. Wouldn’t you?

There could be a way to remedy it using an independent watchmaker. It all depends on their goldsmithing skills. It can’t be simply polished away in that particular location where the minor dent is.

The Rolex Service Center would likely charge to replace it during a service - but that’s just my guess. The only way to know is to send it there and get a service quote.

I would agree is it was a watch he was keeping, but if it was side by side for sale with one without the small dent of course itbwould slightly diminish the value.

It depends if you’re going to wear the watch or sell the watch. If you’re gonna wear the watch, forget it but as soon as it’s up for sale, it’s in a completely different level of scrutiny and competition.

Today’s buyer will look over many many of the exact same watch and ones with dents will only be appealing if the price reflects the damage. The particular model also makes a difference because buyers looking for super hot hard to get models may over look a minor issue compared to more common model.
Your trade-in value will reflect this as well because they have to sell it with a disclosed imperfection.


You have to decide right now if you can wear your watch, enjoy it and let what ever happen be part of the journey with the watch. If you’re going to sweat over every little mark as a possible, detraction in its value, then take the watch off now put it in a safe and don’t wear it.

The vehicle’s condition/wear will be used to determine the trade in value.
Not much different here.
But like a car, you’ll only realize such loss at the time you sell it.
Between now and then, no sense worrying about it.

Resale value on personal property is determined by condition. Ang damage will decrease value. How much is unknown. I agree with the comments that the cost to repair may exceed the loss of value if left as is.

Yes it does, even the tiniest of scratches do.
There is a reason why sellers have their watches polished before offering them for sale. People don’t buy scratched up or dented watches.

Some on TRF like scratches but in the real world not many do.

You may want to take it to a component watchmaker and they may be able to touch it up.
I had a gold bezel that had a small ding on it. I was showing it to the watchmaker I use and right in front of me he fixed it without polishing.

That's for a a gold Submariner Date bezel sent in for exchange. I just checked the price of a steel bezel, and it's $183.80. I've never replaced one of these, so I could be wrong here, but it doesn't look like it includes the ceramic insert; the older bezels sometimes come with the aluminum insert.
