Yes many 16613 blue dial subs from late 1980s into early 1990s the dials turned purple it was a fault in the paint pigment

I think they look lovey, just before I bought my Bluesy I was tempted for this, I believe there was a two year run on these dials ..

Rolex never issued purple dial 16613 just a pigment fault that changed blue to purple, and many of these dials were returned under warranty to have the dials changed to blue. But that was before the days when some were willing to pay extra for these pigment fault dials.

I used to find this watch to be gaudy and too loud. Now, as I get older, and start to give 0 F’s, I absolute LOVE it.

Mine looks more blue in this photo, but definitely lights up purple in outdoor natural light...my first Rolex and a daily wearer for over a decade...still love it!

That’s what I find quite fascinating with Rolex - dials and bezels that patina over the years, APH dials on Daytona, radium and tritium cream patina .. all these quirks are something I find very interesting. I find vintage Rolex more appealing,

My dad had a 16618 from 1992 that turned purple. He let Rolex swap it out under warranty. Such a shame.

Well back then in the late 1980s early 1990s it was considered as a flaw and many dials were replaced under the Rolex warranty. But once some sellers started saying rare dial etc and net said it might be collectible, and some started to pay extra money for them it changed .Its funny today when many dials on varies Rolex watches back then were considered as flaws have now become collectible and many pay extra for them.

I normally dislike coloured bezel watches, & have never been a fan of the bluesy.

That purple dial is incredible though. If a fault caused that, then it’s a happy one.

Have Rolex ever recreated that colour dial on a more recent model?
