This will make Frans cry....
When I joked about slicing up a B-3 jacket to make panny straps, some people actually do it:

That certainly is a crying shame. Why slice up a piece of history when all the leather in the world is available quite freely?

yikes thats a bit extreme... I saw pics of one guy that turned his old Dr Martens into straps and they looked fantastic.. but at least that wasn't a historic item he butchered (then again to him they might have been).

Historic to one is a strap and matching belt to another.

I'm all about preserving history, but if the jacket doesn't have any historical significance, I don't see any issue in slicing it up for re-use.
I just stumbled across my old university leather jacket and thought at size 44, I could get a lot of straps out of it! Nice 22 year old blue leather! |

I still have my old jacket too! Those things seem to wear like iron! Mine's black....would make nice dress straps since it's a tad on the snug side 20 years later....

Then again, when I ordered it I was in full racing fitness and only weighed about 170lbs. I may just keep it and give it to C when she gets big enough to wear it.... next year. |

The jackets are either civilian copies (and poor ones) or are modern (the Luftwaffe jacket). Now if a real vintage A-2 was cut up for a strap that would be a real shame. The old holsters on the other hand is a bit of an ‘in between’ case. Don’t know how rare they have become. It must be the heft, patina and thickness of the leather that makes it suitable for straps
