Missing a piece in my collection, but is the submariner the answer?

Hi everyone,

I’m hoping to collect a Patek in the next few weeks which will nicely fill a spot in my collection. I ideally think 5 watches is the perfect number, however, I am up to 6, and I still don’t have a diver. Because of this I feel I need to add a diver taking it to 7.

My problem is 1) the BLNR is very similar to the submariner, so I’m not sure If both would be a bit overkill. 2) if I was to pick a diver, it would probably be the submariner. But it seems a little… boring. So I’m considering either the LV version or, a birth year sub to add vintage to the collection and having a birth year watch to round it off. I’m born in the 90s so a 16610 would be the option, unless I go no date.

My current collection is:

Rolex BLNR oyster
Rolex DaytonaC white dial
Rolex DD40 YG black motif dial
JLC reverso ultra thin duo face GMT
AP 15450st blue dial
Patek 5205G blue dial

All have been bought at retail, and the JLC was a 21st present from my family so I’m reluctant to sell any.

Opinions would be appreciated, thank you.

A birth year no date sub would fit nicely into the collection as a it appears the rest of your rolex watches are all modern variants.

First of all, what a collection you have, as you bought all these at retails!

I'd look into the 15720ST. I love my gray color!

1) The BLNR is not similar to the Sub. It doesn't look like one and it has a completely different function.

2) Boring Subs are still one of the most popular and good looking watches on the planet.

x) LV's are green... Birth Year? sorry, just don't get that. 16610 or 14060 are always good choices.

The sub and the BLNR can live together in any collection because for me they are different watches.Adding a birth year sub makes perfect sense to what is a fabulous selection

Don’t buy a Diver just because you don’t have a Diver.

I also don’t be get the birth year thing. I get wanting a watch from a certain time period but birth year has never appealed to me.

I’d go vintage Sub over modern though if you do continue down the sub path. A nice matte dial 5513 would be my choice .

Maybe just enjoy what you have? You don't need a Submariner unless you go diving, and even then. Subs and BLNRs are too similar, in my opinion, to own both and the Sub doesn't do anything your GMT doesn't already do. I would sell my Sub if I ever bought a BLNR.

First place my mind went, too!

Either matte dial 5513 or the matte dial Submariner Date of that era (1680? I get confused sometime between the 1680, 16800, and 168000).

Nice collection, the new H Moser with bracelet announced today would very much help diversify your collection. imho it's time to find different case / bracelet / strap shapes.

Love the Submariner, but I find the BLNR also to be quite similar.

How about a Glashutte Original SeaQ Panoroma Date for a diver. Incredible watch that would add some diversity.

Thanks for the replies guys. Regarding the 15720ST, I have small wrists so apart from the 15450, I feel most AP watches wouldn’t work on my wrist. A shame really.

Objectively I think they are great watches.

If you want different, the Deep Sea stands out. The other watch that might work is the Ti Yacht Master.

Granted function is completely different, visually, GMT and sub similarity is too much for me. For that reason along, I went with VTNR and sub combo. Same same but different. I wouldn't get a diver just to get a diver unless you actually dive. Not a fan of AP divers so complete skip for me. Rather put the money towards something substantially different like a skydweller or even a code/another ap.

Don’t worry too much about birth year particularly. You won’t know what year it is when it’s on your wrist and telling time.

However with no 5 digits in the collection and 5 digits being the best IMO. Go for a 16600 or 16610 if you find the 16600 uncomfortable. It’s a little different and super cool.

LV, that would be different enough from the BLNR.

LV and No Date are my 2 favorite Sub references. Either one would be a great fit and not redundant.

If you are not 100% set on birth year, then 16610 LV. Green bezel, maxi dial and 5 digit case. It covers two of your criteria: 16610 and LV.

My Submariner is the cornerstone of my collection. Boring, maybe, depending on how you look at it but what is wrong with boring? The Submariner is a classic and a pleasure to wear. The Glidelock clasp is worth the price of admission alone for me. I like the ND version for the balance of the dial.

I think the BLNR and Sub can play in the same sandbox. My preference would be a five digit it's lighter and much more comfortable. The aluminum bezel is also very nice.

I was in a New Orleans a couple weeks back for the jazz festival.
While strolling around the French quarter I stopped in at Wellington and Company, Fine Jewelry because they had several nice watches in the window. They did have a submariner I looked at it was 95 or 96, not sure now, but it was in good condition. I considered buying it for myself because I am looking for a replacement for my 67 Tudor submariner (passed down by my father), however I do have some things on my ADs waitlist, so I passed it up.
Their number is 504-525-4855 if you care to follow up.
Good luck in your search.

I wouldn't add a diver unless you want/or need one. Having one to round out a collection, especially when you have so many other nice watches...well, it just doesn't make sense.

Now, speaking only for me, I think the diver's bezel is the most useful complication in the sports watch arena, so I have a ton of them. But what's important here, especially since you're trying to keep the collection to a manageable number, is what YOU want. Good luck and keep us posted.

My vote would be for the LV to give you some green to round out a really great collection!!

I too understand the draw of a birth year watch if you can find the right one with a truly full set. For me I want one with a purchase receipt to prove when it was from so if I found the right one I’d want to add it, but finding the perfect birth year watch isn’t something you can or should rush, so get the LV and if you ever see the perfect birth year piece pop up you can always trade/liquidate if needed to acquire.

Great collection. I own both a BLNR and a Sub, however my BLNR is on Jubilee. Perhaps this is an option if you’re too concerned about overlap.
I also own a Patek and a couple of Daytonas and just feel the need to keep a Sub in my collection.
Fun problem to have!
