Lost in the hype, bought a hot model from AD - buyers remorse - next steps

Guilty as charged - I put my name down for a hot model a year ago but pivoted a few months later to a different model and there was also associate turnover. Been working with a new associate for the past 5ish months following up on the new model and doing the dance. Really like the new guy as my previous experiences have been quite cold.

Last week I got a call for the original one, admittedly I was excited to get "a call" even though it wasn't "the call" and being a hot model I talked myself into it and made the purchase.

Now after a week it is still unworn but I realize that even though the watch is so beautiful, it doesn't really fit with where I wanted my collection to go. It is a model that is easy to flip for a few $K profit but I feel a bit greasy about it. Further with this specific model I almost prefer the more basic dial option which feels silly too.

So what next? Do I go back to the AD and try to return it (technically a no return policy), do I call AD and explain, do I just flip it? I don't want to damage the relationship with the AD, I would assume I'm off the list for the model I really wanted. Advice appreciated.

TL:DR - caught in the hype, buyers remorse, what next without damaging AD relationship.

Having no idea what "hot" model you're talking about, I guess I would sell it at a price point you don't feel "greasy" about, and then get what you want.

Life's too short for all the agony you're putting yourself through.

Not really "agony" just don't want to burn a bridge with a good associate at an AD I have purchase history with..

This forum is so funny, people spend 10's or 100's of thousands of dollar, hundreds/thousands of posts on the Rolex forum and hundreds/thousands of hours thinking about, researching and pondering their collection and then act aloof and above it all when others put in effort.

Mint DJ41, fluted jubilee - not the hottest model but in demand for sure. I have been trending towards white dial would be more appropriate for my collection going forward.

I get the sentiment, but I'd just sell it. I've never flipped a Rolex that quickly, but I have other brands. Unless we are talking very limited PP and AP pieces that are sourced through very high end grey dealers who keep tabs on this sort of thing, no one is going to bother you about this.

Let AD know, ask them what they suggest.

See, I'd make this move. Nothing wrong with the mint dial, but I think a white dial Datejust with a fluted bezel and Jubilee is a classic look. I have the slate dial and white was my second choice. I get that this is not the popular sentiment, but I absolutely see where you are coming from.

Sell it

Buy the piece you wanted originally

Pocket the change

Head off into the sunset for a steak dinner with the profits

(Btw - I have a 41mm DJ with white dial, fluted on Jubilee and I love it, It's a timeless watch, which will never go out of fashion)

Sub LV is my #1 choice, then white dial on the DJ41 would be my choice on that model. I thought this could kind of combine both worlds but I don't think it does. I would still need my AD to push for the Sub LV for me but I'm not sure now that I got my allocation.

Sell it. Who cares, do you think Rolex care? Rolex made their money, your AD made some good change and now it's your turn.

Easy to get caught in the hype - but thinking about wearing these things for 20-30 years sometimes the more basic option makes sense is where my mind goes.

If you don't want it anymore then sell it. It’s just a watch. Sheesh.

I just don't know if that's accurate - if AD's are being careful not to sell to flippers that well could dry up

100%. I have the 126610LV. A white dial Datejust with fluted bezel on Jubilee would pair perfectly with it. Some day, down the road, maybe add a GMT in any configuration you want.

You asking me what to do in this scenario is like asking a guy under a bridge if you should take a hit.

Not sure you'll be making a few K profit on that model, infact, I'd say you will be down if you sell it to a reseller.

Sell it anyway, straight swap it for the DJ41 white dial and pocket the change

Wait a few months for the Sub call at the AD

they wont pull anything silly like ask you to wear the other watch again etc, that's all a myth.

Sounds like you are Rolex hype collector like many today they buy the hype to wear the hype.As for this AD relationship stuff it mainly exists in internet land.As all ADs are just retail shops that sells watches nothing more and just like any other retail shop,as you bought it you can do whatever you like with it.

Let the guy be, man

Not everyone who buys a new watch needs to be labelled. If he likes/wants something, let him have it

Most of my collection is new references, does that make me less of a collector?

I think the mint dial sells for more $ on the secondary market. I'd see if you can find a trusted seller that will do a straight up trade for a white dial one.

OP, maybe you should consider asking for a dial swap. That way you keep a watch you seem to like, and stay the course for the LV.

You can take it back to your AD or RSC and ask for a dial swap - they usually do this free of charge within the first 6 months of ownership. Buyers often decide that they would like to switch so not an uncommon request.
