Destro...Denotes a LHW watch....where does that come from?

At the last watch show I went to we had a discussion about the 219 Destro. The 219 is a left hand wind watch. Throughout history leftie watches got the moniker "DESTRO". I'm from Italian heritage and the word "destra" means right so it never made sense to me that they called the left hand wind watches destros. Well it hit me the other day. Righties wear destros to stop the crown from digging into their wrist but the original designs were probably for left handed people. Lefties usually wear their watches on the right (destra) wrist. So my guess is that the word "destro" was used to denote a watch that was designed to be worn on the right "destra".....therefore "destro".

Ok, just a theory. I'd like to hear other reasons why they call the 219 a Destro. Got one? Let's here it.

Thanks,
Rob

According to the research I've done, you would be correct. The destro (219 and 26 among others) were designed to be worn on the right wrist so that the Italian divers of old could still wind them while wearing the depth-meter on the left wrist.

Did that make any sense? I hope you see my point ....

Did you get the 219 that Jason had a month ago? I was looking at it hard, but it disappeared off my radar before the stars aligned .....

Cheers!
Bill

A left handed person wears their watch on their right arm ( generally). So Destro refers to a watch meant to be worn on the right wrist.
