Rolex Submariner : A maddening watch for a maddening personality
1997 : Friend in HS shows me his Sub. First time I've seen it, surprised Rolexes look like that too, think it's awesome, want one one day.
2008 : Buy my first Sub 2008-2018 : Buy a ton of watches to build a "collection" sell literally each one because I end up wearing the Sub all the time. Rinse, repeat, lose a lot of money. 2019 : Dumbest decision in my watch hobby history, sell the Sub. Been wearing my Apple Watch for a while, figure I might be out of the hobby for good so decided to sell the Sub. 2021 : Get back into watches hard during COVID, pick up the 124060 2023 : AD somehow allocates me a BLNR, similar enough, so I sell the 124060 2023 : I miss the Sub, ask AD for one, eventually get a 126610. 2024 : Get a couple of "heavy hitters" I thought I'd never get. Contemplate selling the Sub. Today : Check the time. Oh, I'm wearing the Sub. Been wearing it the last couple of days without noticing. What a boring watch, but damn it it's also so perfect and easy to wear. Just a perfect watch. |

I get it. I've been favoring a 5 digit sub lately. Can't have a collection without one.

It's weird getting sentimental over an inanimate object, but a Sub does evoke different feelings for me. I've wanted one since 15, and have owned one for a good 40% of my life. It's crazy if I think about it like that.

Think it was in one of Kats posts I read the black Submariner is the "collection killer", which is why I've resisted getting a 5 digit 16610, I'm afraid I'd put it on and never wear any other watch again. Lol

It’s hard to fault the GADA aspect of any black dial sub…date or no date.
Some watches are better in certain situations but the sub will still pass just fine in an era in which Apple watches are being worn with suits. Any mechanical watch can be a dress watch these days… Often times the chase comes full circle…and watches are no different. |

126710BLRO and 116610LV are the only two watches I will ever need to keep me happy but are by no means the only watches I will ever want.

The Sub is the King of Kings. Thanks for the timeline story, we get it, even if no one else does! :)

I get it, the sub is basic, boring but so so good.
I want to expand my collection but the Sub is me, I am the sub and its timeless |

Very well said, my 16610 is indeed a collection killer. Have to actively try and wear other pieces.

These three will always be in my watch box. Others might or might not be. Funny thing, Sub was the last one I got as I considered it to be not interesting for many years.
That is until I tried the ND version... |

The hunt is always the most exciting part of collecting lol. That being said, I went through a similar process as you. Had an 114060, sold it, tried to scratch the itch with other brands, and ended up back with a 124060. This one is never going anywhere.
TLDR; keep the sub, unless it's to go back to a 124060 ;) |

My Submariner timeline
1992: Became obsessed with watches at the age of 5, get watches in any way possible, never not with one on my wrist. 2001 : Age of 14, start job where everyone wears a Rolex, guy I look up to wears this amazing Black & steel watch.. what is it? Oh, a Submarine? Sub Mariner? Submariner... nice. I will get one one day, hopefully. 2017 : 30th birthday, I buy myself my first Submariner, finally, after years of never forgetting that watch and slowly saving. 2018: Started my business, needed to sell the Submariner to help fund it 2018 : After selling it, got the call for a 116710BLNR, so had to take it 2021 : Business going well, realised I never needed to sell the Submariner after all, what an idiot.... Begin to build up a few more watches, hmmm... I'm missing something. 2023 : I miss the Sub, ask AD for one, and eventually get a 126610LN. Today : My wife tells me "don't you dare sell that watch again..." |

Rolex Submariner : A maddening watch for a maddening personality
Because the Submariner is the best watch ever. But I also have the GMT BLNR and I’m always torn between which of those two I can truly do without. The answer is neither.

Sub, the main staple to any Rolex collection. Much too iconic to not have one

I started with the Submariner, 1992-1993, and have typically had some version of one in the collection since. It is the watch for me and my SS ND 124060 is a no sell/trade watch.

I went the following route: 16600, 16610, 16610LV, 16613 on which I put a Sultan dial. Sold the whole lot a few years ago. Bought a 16613 (2002) again at the beginning of the year.

I love this topic and all the talk about the SS Sub being a collection killer. I hated on the SS Sub (and all Subs for that matter) for 25+ years then I got my first one back during Covid when I was suddenly open to trying everything. Since then it’s become my favorite watch and I wear it all the time. Yes it’s boring and simple. But it’s just sooooo perfect. It’s so good and easy to wear that I’ve been contemplating selling my whole collection in favor of this one watch.

Rolex Submariner : A maddening watch for a maddening personality
The problem IMO with this watch hobby or better called watch-virus is that you always get back to a submariner.
