Lange & Sohne Private function
Well, it wasn't too private as I suppose anyone could walk into the AD and request a showing, but hey, I had an official invitation. After being plied with some 12 year old Dewar's (quite nice, btw) I strolled the all the watches. The AD must have had over 100 L&S on display along with a few pre war pocket watches. I was amazed how finely finished the pocket watches were finished. Certainly as fine as the modern watches.
The AD had a flat panel TV showing all aspects of the watches along with the history of the brand, both old and new. I had to chuckle as the AD also sells the other German brand GO. They must have felt awkward about this as the AD had as the speaker the US Lange president. To solve their problems, the AD had a salesman tape over with white paper the GO backlit display. Don't wanna sell a GO by accident at the Lange show! I didn't buy another Lange, yet. I'm only one third of the way there for the Lange fund, but I do have my eye on the RG Datograph. As I left, I was handed the L&S goody bag which contained a L&S mouse pad, polishing cloth, a copy of the DVD playing at the AD, along with two books. One is a complete catalog of all watches past and present along with the history and the other is a glossy paperback chock full of photos of everything Lange. Lange knows how to put on a show! |

Gee, Marc, and you didn't invite us? What kind of friend are you?
Must have been a great time. Did they hand out little towels to catch the drool?

A. Lange & Sohne is a great brand. A couple of collectors in my area have Langes, one a Lange One and Datograph and the other a Lange One and 1815, so I was lucky enough to handle them and the owners also took the backs off so we could examine the finishing of the movement with a loupe--quite impressive. So you are a fortunate man to have one. Maybe you should monitor the forums for some of the dinners the manufacturers sometimes hold (I think these are more common in Asia than the U.S., but I believe that Breguet had two (one in NYC and one in LA) and UN held a luncheon in Seattle here lately). Thanks for the report.

Agree I respect Lange class with pedigree and a little bit of uniqueness.

I didn't bring a camera, but man oh man, the AD had some nice Langes. I'm not really into diamond bling, but Lange brought some gorgeous models in the Saxonia line, that imo were stunning, not tacky.
The AD had two perpetuals, and a Dato Double Split for sale. On display (not sure if it was for sale) was the Dato Perpetual. The last model retails for 115K USD! Yikes. Myself, I wore the Dato Pt. Perpetual and didn't walk out with a new Lange, either. |

Sounds like a good time Marc.
I guess it would be "bad form" if the customers started buying GO's at the Lange event, eh? Did they also hide all the GO stock? |

To the AD's credit, the GO stock was kept in the case, but the AD must have removed a few other brands from the cases as there was sooooo much L&S stock floating around. I did ask if all the L&S watches were inventory and the sales manager said yes. I believe that the AD (located in Cambridge, MA) must be the number 1 seller in the US. I'm sure they sell more watches than the NYC outlets. The sales manager also told me they have already sold 4 of the brand new Richard Lange model. It's a very accurate 3 hand watch, going for the mid 20K USD for a gold model. I'd take the L1 any day for the same price, thank you. |
