Rolex Service

What happens if a watch goes into Rolex for service with a redone dial? Will they make me replace it for a period correct dial? Or will they not work on it at all.

At a fee? What if you bought the watch second hand? Not trying to hijack, I am just curious.

Bad news and good news here. If you send the watch to Rolex for service, they really don't care where or when you purchased the watch or dial. The good news is they will make it correct before it comes back to you. The bad news - again - you pay for the new dial!

Forgive my confusion, but I'm fairly new on TRF. Are you saying that if I sent my Submariner with the custom diamond dial pictured below, they would replace the dial with a stock unit and bill me for the new dial? Fortunately, I bring my watch to the AD who created the dial in the first place for routine cleaning and oiling, and they return it to me buffed and beautiful.

That's right, if you want the watch serviced at the RSC, it has to be an authorized Rolex dial or one of their diamond dials. RSC wouldn't touch that Rolex with an aftermarket, gem filled dial. Your jeweler/AD might, but not the RSC. If you're not sending it to the RSC, it really doesn't matter as there are many watchmakers and Rolex AD's who would service the watch. By the way, that's quite a dial you have there Joey.

Cheers.

That's crazy. The dial work cost me $2200 in 1992. Would they return the dial (or at least the diamonds) to me or would RSC keep them? If so, how can that be legal, especially if the owner did not know of this policy?

That is a good question, do they keep or return the dial? What is the general cost of a new champ dia 8 brilliant 2 baguette dial and sapphire glass for a day date replaced by the RSC? I am guessing mine is aftermarket on my president at the moment. Either way RSC will be notifying me this week when I drop it in for inspection.

Most AD's are in jewelery stores, who are in business to sell gems, jewelery and watches at a profit. Altering dials has been a profitable business for them for a long, long time. What made it profitable for jewelers/AD's was the outrageous expense of buying genuine, Rolex enhanced dials. Jewelers jumped at the opportunity to fill the void between over-priced Rolex dials and dealer-altered, genuine dials. There is a very substantial profit for a jeweler to alter the dials themselves instead of trying to sell someone an over-priced, genuine Rolex dial. Plus, as I observed on your Submariner, your custom dial is not a variety that Rolex offers, so they are filling the void there from what Rolex offers and what the customer wants.

Most people would rather spend $1000 for a non-Rolex, diamond dial instead of $3000 or $4000 for the genuine diamond dial. I can't say that I blame them!!!!!!!

They'll return it to you, but the RSC won't repair the watch. Their concern is that if something happens to the watch movement or dial because of the non-Rolex alteration, they would have to honor the RSC warranty if they serviced the watch. Since they won't honor the warranty for non-Rolex alterations to a dial or other part, they will not service the watch.

Rolex will not return counterfeit parts to the customer. I would not consider an altered dial in the category of "counterfeit parts." It is enhanced or altered but not fake.

I agree with John....RSC dont care even if you put a $5000 worth of diamonds there....You have to ask this questions before you hand over your watch to RSC...They really dont want any alteration on their watches....

After handing over thousands of dollars to Rolex, I consider it MY watch at that point. I consider this to be the same situation as if I brought my Harley-Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide with new $700 Vance and Hines Monster Oval mufflers for service and received it back with a set of stock pipes.

I'm glad I found this forum, as I previously had no idea that this policy existed, and I've owned the watch for 17 years. TRF is informative and quite entertaining.
