I never had an issue with hotel safes, cash, watches, etc. Of course I always stay at upscale hotels.

Is it safe in a safe?

Can we just stop for one day, enjoy the hell out of our watches, not worrying about what city traveling to, where storing, tape for scratches and so on?

It’s just a watch. Tomorrow, it will still be just a watch. If there is this much concern, there are much better worry free ways of spending one’s money.
Too bad it takes a lot of years on this Earth to understand that. We would all have more hair or lots less grey.

I have traveled the world with up to four or five expensive watches with me, plus four or five of wife’s as well, and we have worn them everywhere, have kept them in room safes, and would you believe it, have never had one lost or stolen. Go figure. Perhaps because common sense applied along the way. Who knows?

Just spent two weeks in 9 hotels.
Should have photographed all the jewelry in all the safes.
Hear hear!

And ditto.

That’s the safest approach as the reception safes are monitor 7/24

Sometime I'll take a few, Seiko and Orient. If I take a Rolex, that's all I'll take and it's on my wrist 24/7

I travel with only one watch, and I take the watch everywhere with me. I would not leave my Expensive time piece in a hotel Safe. If I am not sure of the area I am travelling to, I will leave the watch at home.

Depending on the hotel and location, either in the safe or only one watch with me, and always on my wrist!

Once when my young son became interested in the hotel safe, he pushed all the buttons. My valuables were in there and my combo no longer worked. I called the front desk, a bit worried.

They sent a guy from maintenance who had the master key. "Happens all the time," he said. I stopped using hotel safes after that.

One watch per trip and it's usually a beater.

I’d be willing to bet more Rolexes are lost on trips by being left behind.

On a trip mine stays on my wrist until I get home.

Only bring 1 watch (not counting my Fitbit) and when I am in the gym I put it in the room safe. At night I put the extra bolt on the door and leave it next to my wallet.

If I go to a hotel, it’s one watch, if I go to stay at a close relative or friends house, then sometimes, sometimes it’s multiple watches.

I accidentally left 2 watches in the safe once.

Left it locked, checked out of the room
The cleaners opened the safe, checked “nothing was in there”

Missed the airport bus

New people were checked in to the room

Spoke to and the hotel manager interrogated the cleaning staff with me on my behalf- on the notion that the locker was closed, they have to override it and there was nothing in there? Doesnt make sense

The hotel finally decided to ask the current guests if they can enter the room to find lost item

The guests agreed

The watches were still in the locker, now opened

Cleaning staff got an earfull from the manager. They said they couldnt see it because the watch pouch was black

I thank the manager, tipped $200 for going above and beyond trying to locate it (noting its my fault i left in there in the first place)

Got a free limo ride to the airport with an hour to spare before boarding

Narrowly caught my fight

Lesson learnt, i dont need three watches while i travel

Sorry, but to me this is not very far from like forgetting there is a child in your car and leaving them behind in a child seat.

In 40 years of traveling, extra cash, jewelry and back up documents invariably go in safe.
Daily, safe is checked to make it is locked, repeatedly, as if OCD, before leaving room.
On last day when checking out, the very first thing I do, even before brushing teeth or going to the bathroom, is open the safe and remove and pack away all contents. I even go further to remove the mat in the safe to ensure nothing is left behind due to them usually being black and making it difficult to really see, such as in your case with the housekeeper.

Trust me, heck if you will ever forget or lose anything, if a specific ritual is followed.

1 watch on me all the time, wrist or front pocket.

Never used the hotel safe or even my luggage as some hotel staff are good at opening and going through your things while you are out.

Wow, and I thought I was the only one doing almost exactly what you just described!! Except I do take a leak before going to the safe. This way I know I won't rush the safe clearing.
Also, take photos of passports on phone and store on Cloud. I needed that just now when I was renting a car in Barcelona and didn't bring my passport from the hotel.
