It's just a watch.

Cheesiest thread I've seen. " look at me, I bought a Rolex, so I'm going to remind myself how good I have it by helping those whom I basically think will never have my luxuries"? Whatever.

There is virtually no system of ethics that doesn't encourage this (well, let's leave Ayn Rand out of this), and it doesn't fall only or especially on people with Rolexes. It's what humans are set up to do, as a social species.
Agree this should be in the Open Discussion forum. |

lol. I think a lot of you have missed out on the point the OP was making. He was basically saying that if you have some nice things in life, it's always good to give back where you can.
Lets not berate somebody for trying to be positive. PS: If you think you can get through life happy without ever doing something for people/society, I STRONGLY disagree. Have some compassion. |

It's kind of sad that threads about charity, donations, etc. usually end badly on this board. I've seen it many times over the last few years. It's an oddly touchy subject, even though that's not my experience in the real world. I'll not offer my opinion as to why.
I applaud everyone who donates their time, expertise, and/or money to help out those in need.

I agree with you though, I personally felt good for thinking that what I was doing was making a difference somewhere, however small it could possibly be. I just don't feel like making people feel bad in any way for not doing it if they don't want to, I much prefer to choose to do it by myself and let people decide on their own.

I think Carl (as he often does) hit the nail on the head! Perhaps the OP's wording of his post could have been a bit different. If he was indeed inquiring of us as to whether we shared his views on "giving back" when we feel we are blessed with goodness (whether or not as a result of our hard work, or risks taken), using Rolex ownership as an example, then I appreciate the reminder, for I often do forget, while trying to navigate life in general.
While in South America, I learned that "giving back" does not always have to equate with money, or even time.......sometimes, simply acknowledging someone's existence....a simple hello, handshake, hug, how are you, or thank you, and be a huge "gift" to the many who are what I call the walking "invisibles". From my experience, the simple act of kindness can be the biggest gift of all, and seemingly one that we don't part with much, these days......again, at least from what I have seen, over the last few years. Regardless of the controversy these threads invariably bring, I like them, for reminding me of things that I tend to forget, from time to time.......

My words were chosen accordingly. The reason for my post was two fold.
1. Most people that can afford a Rolex are generally pretty successful. It's important to remember your roots and give a little back where you can and I'm not referring to money, it helps inspire folks. 2. As a reality check to all the threads, "My Rolex and all my great/expensive stuff" A little balance is a good thing. For those of you that supported my, I thank you. To those that don't, we'll I guess I'm just different and lll leave it at that. This will be my last post in this thread and if I inspired just one person in my challenge, I will call that something positive.
