Your Rolex and giving back to your community.

I was once told by an old mentor (a crusty old combat vet that went far in the military), "If you make it, and I'm giving you the tools, it's yours to make or break. You need to give something back to the community and I don't mean money. It's important!" I'll never forget those words. Whether I made it or not is subjective, I think I did in spades. My point is that if you can afford a Rolex, you can probably afford to give back a little time to your community. I do, and like to wear my Rolex while doing so, as a sign. I believe it is a sign of reward while maintaining my humility. So I challenge all of you TRF'ers to give back a little time while wearing your Rolex. It's a gift to those that you mentor and surprisingly a gift to yourself. It's important, and thanks JG! Fair Seas and Following Winds...

Let's hear your story or plans for the future.

Very true - there's a verse... I can't help the poor if I'm one of them, so I got rich and gave back - to me that's a win win!

Holidays are coming - but generosity should always be there.

Wow - I never met anyone that felt the same way. I spend a good deal of time volunteering in my community and typically wear my watch tucked under my cuff while doing all kinds of tasks. When checking the time I remind myself of what I have and how much others are REALLY in need.

Interesting. I never ever wear my Rolex when volunteering. I find my humility in anonymity.

Been there, and I completely agree/understand. It all depends on your roll as the volunteer. If I'm handing out food at a shelter I'm low key. If I'm mentoring kids in a leadership position I'm wearing a nice watch on purpose.

Im not very good with humans....but
We take care of homeless bunnies or abused ones...
I give money and time (keeping them) until we can find homes for them.
We have had about 40 bunnies come though our house so far
We had to give a bath to a one today....she was in bad shape (dirty and fleas) and very scared.
Plus we have 3 cats also...
My wife spends one day a week at Texas Childrens hospital and Phoenix Children's hospital....staying with very sick kids.

Sadly I don't have the sort of free time to give back like some of you. I do, however, make charitable donations to causes I find compelling or touching. Orbis is one I find very inspiring and with the aviation connection, it really peaks my interest. We all do what we can with what we have.

The best charity remains discreet and anonymous, not declared publicly, while 'challenging' others, like this, I believe.

You are taking the innocence of the question asked away!

You are taking the innocence of the question asked away!

If you don't volunteer your time, please don't post rudely stating the thread ought not to exist! ( ! )

There was no question in the OP, and nor has anyone been rude or said the thread should not exist. While honourable and with good intention, it contained a self-declaration of charity, and a challenge for all those who own a Rolex to do the same or similar, which I find a little strange.

I will be wearing my 1971 Oysterdate Precision, when I am literally on the other side of the globe doing volunteer work, and teaching others to do so as well. I leave in 2 weeks.

Oh, and I help people almost every day where I live as well. If you're not giving back, then what's the point?

If you purchase a Rolex watch, the Rolex company distributes a significant part of the profits towards schools and other charitable institutions in Switzerland. A small percentage of profits goes to the remaining family members, whole the rest goes to charity. So while we enjoy our watches, we are also doing our bit.

I think it is great that a lot of you guys take the time to help your community as well as some people who will need it, I truly do. However, I must agree with Karl to a certain extent, I am not so keen on reading sophisms like if you can afford a Rolex you can probably give back a little time to your community, I personally fail to see the link or the point and I do not enjoy feeling challenged to do something that should remain a personal choice. I feel like such generous acts should be made out of initiative, not out of any sort of pressure by somebody else (otherwise it takes the generosity out of the act in my humble opinion).

For the record, I did give some money and time to quite a few organizations (the names are irrelevant in my opinion) over the years. Perhaps I did not have a Rolex at that time, perhaps I gave more than somebody, perhaps I gave less than somebody else but I still did and am proud of what I did. If anybody wants to talk about it because he or she feels proud of his actions then, by all means, feel free to do so and I shall be one of the very first to congratulate you on your good deeds, as long as you do not try to make anybody else feel bad for their choices.

If you ask me I think the challenge and the part of the post I put in my reply took the innocence of the question away much more than Karl's posts.

This is nice to hear, and I feel the same way.

My wife and I have always given a lot (even when we didn't really have that much) to the local "no-kill" animal shelter. Fostering motherless kittens was one of the best experiences I've ever had. My wife is pregnant now, and I'm sure that once our daughter is old enough that we will get her involved in this sort of thing as well.

I'll only say that if you're so inclined, volunteering to help Habitat for Humanity is a great way to give back to the community. I'm not challenging anyone to do it, but it has been rewarding for me.

Great way to live life!! We are nothing without each other. I wish more people embraced that approach.

My wife and I help out at a local hospice. No one deserves to die alone. This has been a VERY rewarding experience.
