Ways I have damaged a watch

An elderly lady attending a funeral with me walked past and her diamond bracelet brushed up against the crystal on my new YM Blue.......yep, 1/4” scratch!

My MacBook pro scratches my clasp badly whenever I m typing on it

Bungee in the car boot (trunk) came loose and wham!....straight in the Yacht-Master.

Wow!.......it's SO dangerous, out there.

I'm gonna have to get a REALLY tough watch, to survive all those dangers from
door frames to diamond bracelets and errant bungees.


It's an absolute JUNGLE out there!

Mountain bike accident, hit my Seiko Marinemaster hardlex glass on a rock. The result was a nasty scratch, a slightly damaged rubber band and lots of bramble scratches and thorns on me.

I was buying fish yesterday at the market - reached over the glass to grab, turned around as my wife called my name , as I was bringing my arm back I smashed my 2 week old subc into the metal rod holding up the glass. I'll start using my right hand from now on...

One of those narrow bathroom stall doors at PHL airport; banged my IWC Portuguese 7-day pretty good as I was trying to maneuver my suitcase out behind me. Ended up with a couple dings right next to the crystal.

The biggest offender is the edge of my work laptop though (not a MacBook but also metal construction). I didn’t realize it was causing the scratches, so it did a number on my BLNR’s bracelet. I’ve since used a few layers of tape for protection.

The second or third day of wearing my brand new DSSD....first (of many) visible scratches on the clasp came while typing.
MacBooks Pros and metallic clasps are just not meant to come together.

and the thing you need to avoid most is TRF. as you WON'T stop buying watches... even if you can't afford it.

Be careful taking off your watch while washimg your hands in public. Lost one when I forgot it on a public washroom sink. Vanished in an instant.

Very important. My friend has an IWC ceramic (dunno what model). Took it from his bedside table, dropped it on his hardwood floor. The watch case cracked like the ceramic material that it is. Scared me from getting anything ceramic after that. Cost about $2,000 to replace the case.

Door frames. Dented many bezel inserts over the years on door frames.

Was doing a polish job on a 1016 and dropped it on my shop floor. Broke the main spring and cracked the plexi.

Caught a Sub getting something out of the safe one time and put a nice ding in the case.

Scratches and dings don’t bother me. However the one that took my breath away was entering a storage closet holding a heavy crate in front of me. The doorway caught my Speedy and took it right off the NATO. The watch and both spring bars crashed to the floor. Fortunately only the Hesalite was scratched.

Ridiculous ways, which is why they kind of annoy me. It'd be one thing if I got a scratch while swimming with sharks, or something else dramatic, but instead...
- hands full, holding onto a ceramic plate in my left hand slightly crooked into my wrist. Nasty scratch across the clasp there.
- Crossed hands while making a quick steering correction - medical ID bracelet scuffed across the top of the bracelet, near a lug. Wasn't *that* bad...

Had my wifes datejust in my breifcase taking it in for service. Forgot to take the breifcase
off the roof of my car. Saw it slide off on the interstate. Pulled over, spotted the watch in the middle lane. Before i could get to it a tractor trailer drove over it & i watched it bounce about 8ft. Total destruction !!

Cracked the pip on my Hulk as it glanced the counter as I pulled my arm up after casually throwing something away into the kitchen trash. It was a one in a million, the only thing hit, and it only occurred to me to look later after I wondered about it, but have to replace the whole ceramic bezel on the next service. My advice: use a grabber and stand way back from the demon trash bin. lol

I got a pretty big ding on one of my lugs while on a dive boat in Grand Cayman. Unfortunately it was dropping the watch on the dive boat floor rather than a sensational diving story. The ding still brings back good memories

I always go back and forth on bringing the watch on a dive. Do you wear your dive computer on the opposite wrist? Does the computer go to the dominant wrist and sub moves to non-dominant side? Double up on the same wrist?

Seatbelts!!! I chipped the ceramic bezel insert on my 116613LN. Did not shatter. Kind of punched a chip out. Punched a tiny chip down. About the size of a pin head. I did not notice it until I went to trade it.

Christmas tree stand!!! Folding up the Christmas tree base I shook it to try to loosen a screw and a leg flipped up and dented the back right lug of my 116600. Big dent.

Too many door knobs and door jams to mention... They are tool watches. Wear hard, show no mercy, and polish at service.
