a pelagos is a strong consideration and leaves money to spare… i never really appreciated that watch until i recently had a chance to see it in person and to put it on my wrist.

Or a BNIB Pelagos and pocket the balance.

At that budget, you can't go wrong with a 40mm Explorer II, or a sharp 14060 two liner

If you can, try it on before you buy it. I just had an expensive transaction where I found out that the Sea Dweller is too big for me.
Try it before you buy it. Cheers, Ben |

http://www.rolexforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=9 this is a cool watch...I'm partial to 1989 as a year as well, but also would say "save a grand for an older GMT" otherwise...

Go with what sings to you. Otherwise you will flip in before the month is over. The one you WANT is the one you should get. The hunt is half the fun!

You won't do better than a nice used Explorer, they can be had for a real bargain and are superb. I have seen them selling for around 3k on several occasions.

I would save a bit more and go for Hulk or BLNR but if $5000 is max then you can't go wrong with a "like new" 14060M.

I have a sub and a gmt. Personally I find the gmt most versatile, it is what I wear daily.... Sub is a classic and will never go out of style.

114300 if you can find a used one in that price range would be my choice. The Subs, EXPIIs, and GMTs all look like sport watches. The DJII works well in any environment. If you don't need a moveable bezel then do without it and have a good all purpose watch.
Another alternative I'd consider seriously would be a 39mm OP or even a 36mm one. Here's my 36mm. You'd have change left over if you got the 36mm and be likely well on your way to getting a THBBR as a second watch. |

Exp II is probably the best bang for your buck at this price point

Two line sub and enough money for a nice dinner afterward to wear it to.

I would get a 16600 (Sea Dweller).
It was the top of the line sport watch made by Rolex in the 5 digit serial number era, and it's a ridiculous bargain now. You can find them for $5K. Plus, it has cool features which distinguish from the multitude of 5 digit subs, such as the HEV and cool writing on the case back. You should try one on. |
