My wife accepts it. She could care less. I don't mention them to my other family members. They don't ask and I don't offer. My dad worked hard his entire life and always wore a Timex or he has a seiko for church on Sundays. He would think I'm crazy.

I have a large family in-law, I feel they all believe I'm a snob because I wear a "1000 dollar watch" LOL. If they really knew.

I have no friends or family that have a valid opinion, other than my wife and three kids. They know my appreciation for the finer things and expect it, support it and eventually know they will benefit from it. They already take the attitude of not settling for second best, I think that's an important life lesson we can all live by. Quality in craftsmanship means the difference between leaving a legacy and just leaving a name. Think about all the products we're exposed to everyday. Which ones will still be around and revered when we're gone?
I, like many of you on these boards have been collecting watches since I was a kid, from Belgian pockets to self winding anything, I've always loved a beautiful design supported by a fine mechanism, that's with anything......... Women, cars, watercraft, watches, motorcycles, I think we can all relate. I don't own the things I own because I have a personality complex and seek the attention of others, I own the things I own because I truly enjoy them and appreciate everything about them. Sound familiar? |

They don't care.

It is a joke about coming out of the closet. Has nothing to do with buying a wife a watch. Can I make a recommendation that you become a pledge member of TRF, btw.

Wife knows, thinks I am crazy but doesn't really care unless it would affect our ability to eat.
Kids know I like watches but have no idea what they cost My family (dad and siblings) k ow I have a lot. I am sure they google them to see what they cost as they are nosey. But it is my thing so I really don't think about what others think. I also don't own a Rolex so I can save myself that question from the fam. But I have had several and they are aware. Come to think of it I am going to post an old picture of my dssd on IG. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My wife knows what I have and what they cost. I THINK she understands why I love them. I'm not sure though. I tell her I like things made to last. STEEL is a good thing. STEEL watches. Steel guns. Steel tools. Steel knives. Things made with a purpose in mind.
Relatives are so wrapped up in themselves in one way or another that they never SEE my watches. |

I really don't understand. Absolutely nobody with the exception of another WIS ever noticed a watch I was wearing. Ever.
I also can't imagine me ever telling anyone about a watch I owned or was wearing with the exception of another WIS after they inquired of course. They would be the only type of person that would remotely care.

For me, no one cares what I own. As long as they aren't paying for it.

My Dad thinks I'm nuts- he told me it was ridiculous to spend $5k on something that just tells time. This coming from the guy who spends 20k on a 10 day vacation. Anyhow to each his own. Only if he really knew how much I spend on this addiction....

No one should care, it's your personal choice. If they do care or start paying attention, there is probably some ulterior motive...

My family initially thought I was crazy as well. However, less than a year after I bought my first, I took my dad to the AD and he walked out with a TT Sub!

Great post! Hey dont worry about the negative folks or the ones they say, "Oh you are crazy I would never spend $XXXXX on watch!!" The same folks will go drop 50K on a car that in ten years will be worth 5K. Who is the crazy one?

I haven't told my parents yet. Currently living with them as my mom and dad are getting a divorce. It's been a life long toxic atmosphere with them together and I want to see the whole process end without anymore chaos. I plan on telling my mom about my collection (116613LB & 116621 & in the future the daytona). She grew up with very little (she got electricity at her house when she was 13) so I expect her to explode when I tell her I spent a fortune on a watch... that'll be the day, but things are going well for me and I want to splurge on this new passion. Before this year I never thought much of luxury watches until I had first hand experience with one... we'll see. I'm 22 by the way.

I guess I have an update. Travelled with my Dad and didn't say anything. Been at this conference and literally no one noticed, or if they did no one has said anything!

My family doesn't care about this. They know I love watches since I was 8 and they know I have a huge collection but also know I work very hard to get them. They know me and always my family, wife and daughters are first.
My daughters saw me working on watches since they born and they love watches too. The elder one loves to hold my wrist and move it close to her ear for hearing the movement. Sometimes I wear two watches because I'm testing one and she asks me "is well adjusted?" Hahaha. The younger one just loves to turn the bezel one thousand times per minute! My friends never ask me about my watches. They know are expensive but they have their hobbies too so is mutual respect. Where I live, specially in summer season, you can see more expensive watches than "basics" so my neighbourhood is very well costumed to high level watches and are bit bored with this.
