his own insecurity wasn't your problem. That and he was a client so you handled it well...

I like situations like that. I had an employee that had a customer that was skeptical about the payment he would be making on a vehicle he was purchasing. I proceeded by explaining to him that I had the same payment on my vehicle, which is older and not as nice as the one he was purchasing. He proceeded to say, "well since your wearing a $2,000 suit you can afford it!" I said "wow, thats a close guess, you must know your suits! I'm sure you can afford it too!"

He laughed and signed the papers.

I know it wasnt about watches but the OP's post reminded me of this

Just tell them the watch is priceless as it was given to you upon your fathers passing!

That is absolutely gorgeous. Consider that stolen

When people are rude to me, I tell them they're being rude. I'm very forward anyway, and it's extremely disarming. Trying to come up with some witty retort only works some of the time so I just say "you're being extremely rude to me, I'd like you to stop or apologize". I say it firmly and never break eye contact. Works very well.

Why do people get embarrassed about what they've spent on a watch (or anything)?

Next time someone asks you, tell them, in great detail. I'd say: oh, new? This particular model, the 116610 LV goes for about $10k. You can probably get a next to new model for about $8 grand in the secondary market. You'd be amazed at how actively these things trade. I love it. I have two others but this is definitely my favorite. Do you want to try it on??? It's heavier than you might think.

Then start taking off your watch and hand it to them. Watch them act like they don't want to try it on, but insist until they take it.

Once they have it on their wrist, the jealousy will turn into respect and admiration. It's an undeniable thing of beauty (the watch that is).

Take the high road, smile and pat him on the back. Act like he made a good, solid joke and give no response in reply - just move on.

Anytime someone tries to engage me in a tit-for-tat that might be bad for me (or both of us), I laugh, act like it was a good joke, and move on. Absolutely nothing to be earned in engaging it, but laughing about it always leaves them wondering.

Cheers,

Ben

I've been asked maybe 2 or 3 times on my Rolex and Breitling the "how much" question. Both times I say it's fake, and I think I'll continue to do that. :-). I know it's real.

Saying it was a gift ends that sort of interaction pretty quickly.

It might not be a good response for such sick folks. He would rather say.. 'no wonder...I don't think you can afford it or bought it' adding more to the insult!

Pretty weird how people can get like this and let jealousy eat them inside out. Maybe the fact that I'm barely 20 years old and doing better than him probably made it even worse for him..
I think you handled the original situation well. However, then you say something like this...You really have no idea if you're doing "better than him", and a watch is certainly not an indicator of that. If that's how you really think then maybe you don't come across as diplomatic as you think you do, as statements like that reek of arrogance.

My CEO wears a 20 year old Tag, I wear a Rolex. Am I doing better than him? Not a chance in hell.

Good point, different people have different priorities for their luxury items.

A friend of mine said something about my Sub-C when I got it, asking how much it cost. I told him it cost less than 10% of the cost of his motor home and I can enjoy it every day. Then I added that it won't depreciate nearly as much either, and in 10 years would be worth more than his motor home.

A friend of mine who has two very expensive cars is routinely asked how much they cost. I witnessed him being asked that question one day. He said "Do you want to buy it?" and they said "Well, um, er, no." and he replied "Well it doesn't matter then does it?"
Worked like a charm. Of course I have never asked him, and therefore even I don't know.....

Best response I've heard.

Reminds me of a line from a movie called "After the Sunset":

Ed: So, uh, what kind of business are you in, Max?
Max Burdett: I have a bunch of sweatshops in the Philippines.
Ed: Oh.
Sheila: Oh.
Max Burdett: You should see those kids make those hats.

The best answer depends on who is asking the question...

Wish there was a great answer to peanut butter across all inquiries.

The answer I do want to try out next time I am asked how much it is: " These conversations rarely go well with folks who don't collect watches. I would rather we not talk about it. Thanks.

I was going to add that as well or you can always say my grandfather handed it down to me after he passed...both diffuse the situation quickly.

Not sure why you think Movado is not a real mans watch. They have been making watches alot longer than Rolex. The OP even stated his fathers favorite watch is a Movado and still ticking after 20 years.
