It isn't ridiculous if they have a refund/exchange period. Basically they do this so they can still have a blank card for the watch should someone return it within the period. It is perfectly logical to me.

If they don't have a refund/exchange policy I would expect it to be given to me on the spot, but if they do I wouldn't care if they sent it once it's over.

Mine sent my card to me with the appraisal documentation a couple weeks later. No big deal IMO. As long as I get it in the end, in a reasonable about of time.

My AD makes me sign a form that I agree to the no return policy they have and then they stamp and swipe the card before giving it to me. Very easy!

A big chain AD by me does this. As said, it's in case of returns.
I prefer to buy from my other AD where I get better prices, treatment and service and get the card on the spot at time of purchase.

I don't see what the big deal is. The watch is still under warranty. The AD will have a record of the purchase. If for any reason they don't, your receipt should be all you need until you get the card.

I've got a good relationship with an AD and had both experiences. They held the paper work and didn't activate the warranty on a Rolex I bought for my wife as a gift. Told me not to remove stickers, size or wear it and I could return it for full refund explaining if they activated the warranty it would be considered "used" even if unworn. Followed their policy to the letter and wife decided she wanted something different. We exchanged it for full value no problem. Every other watch I've bought from them, including the one the wife picked, they removed the stickers, sized it, activated the warranty and gave me all paperwork on the spot. As an honest buyer I wouldn't be overly concerned if they kept the paper work. However, the concern is what happens to the watch someone buys and wears for 15 days without the warranty activated and returns it - assuming that's their policy and reason for holding the paperwork. Do they sell it "new" because the warranty had not been activated? That watch, even if the warranty and paper work was held at the AD for 30 days would be "used". Guess it depends on the circumstances and honesty of the buyer and AD.

That's exactly the situation. They would resell the "used" watch as "new".
Happens frequently I suspect. Always important to inspect your purchase carefully before leaving the store. No different really though from a watch that's been sitting in the display for a while. Lots of people try it on and don't buy. It's still "new" though, right? That's why some insist on ordering fresh from the factory.

Not to hijack this thread or anything, but what kind of an AD does stuff like this.

As an individual who likes buying "new", I'd get really upset if I found out the Rolex I just purchased was actually pre-owned by someone else. I don't care if they didn't size it or take the stickers off. Fact is, they more than likely wore the thing. Who buys a watch and then sits and looks at it for 30 days trying to get a sense if they should or shouldn't have bought it. To me that's now a USED Rolex. No different than if you bought a new car, then returned it, and the car dealership rolled back the odometer and resold the car as new to some unsuspecting individual!!!!!

What would Rolex Corporate think of something like this if one of their registered/liscensed AD's did something like this.

I suggest you find out by calling Rolex Corp in the US and give them the name of the AD and tell them what they are doing. Bet that will end that practice real quick.

From my perspective, if I found an AD that did this, I'd never buy from them for fear that the watch was pre-owned. Shady.
