Just be aware of your surroundings, you can get robbed anywhere. By the way, Sadiq Khan, doesn't own London.

Both perhaps?

This thread is good for a few laughs. I don’t know why but the phrase “gun-toting goblins” has me chortling into my beer.

Just stay away from London and spend the evening in Roxbury, a part of your home town.

I feel embarrassed for the person that’s posted this. I actually hope that they are a troll and that this is a (bad) joke. If they genuinely believe what they’ve posted they should be ashamed.

I'd speculate that OP's question is born of ignorance- some intentional, some not.

1. Suspected unintentional: There's actually a lot of misinformation regarding theft and robbery in London. A handful of UK publications have been publishing "crime" headlines regarding knife robberies and assaults over the last couple years. A closer look shows that it's only higher relative to London's own history, and that period in time being quite short- only since 2009 or so. Prior to 2009, theft/robbery-related crime in London was more frequent than it is today.

I don't know about Boston's stats, but this article makes a rigorous claim that London isn't even as dangerous as NYC.

2. Suspected intentional: OP, I live in Chicago and would wear my Rolex on the subway. Some might say that's a bit careless, fine; but a little common sense goes a long way, and I'd rather that someone intelligent enough to work in banking would know that.

Crime statistics in London, Chicago, New York, Boston, Shanghai, whatever- are usually, if not always, inclusive of the city's "tough neighborhoods." If you're traveling for business, chances are, you're not going to be walking alone in an alley, and your rideshare app's service will have vetted drivers to pick you up at the restaurant, take you to the club, or drop you back off at the hotel. So I'm not really sure where the problem is, and I gather that's why people suspect you're trying to make a political issue out of nothing.

Born and raised in London and frequent some so called dodgy areas / events regularly & never had a problem.

Same as anywhere be vigilant and go with your instinct if you suspect anything off.

I get the impression the OP is referring to the absolutely disgraceful state London is in under Khans watch with the state of knife crime and murders every single week and I agree with him / her. It's a war zone out there right now.

War zone . This kind of tabloid-esque hysterical language is unhelpful.

Would you have described London as a war zone in every single year prior to 2008 when the murder rate was perpetually higher than it is now? Perhaps you would. As a resident, I’m pretty relaxed.

And if the OP is worried about the murder rate in London, he should probably move home. Boston had 52 murders in 2018 for a population of 600k. London had 137 for a population on 9 million. So Boston’s rate was circa five times higher.

Yea it is a war zone. Stabbings EVERY day, acid attacks EVERY week, gangs of feral youths in post code wars attacking each other every single day. People don't need to die for things to be pretty bad you do know that right up in your ivory tower?

You referenced murders so I talked about murders.

My point is, if you look at crime data in London over years the rates of violent crime are historically low, albeit there’s been a rise in the last few years.

There always were gangs, daily stabbings and the like - it’s a huge city. There were though fewer media channels reporting on them.

So if you think London is a war zone, then fine. If so, it’s always been a war zone, and a much more dangerous one at that, for 99% of its existence.

This kind of threads are very entertaining.
Probably they are jokes, and if not so, the OPs must have been born yesterday.

Nope.

When everyone is potentially armed it’s even less of a concern.

Then again this is the south.

It's like any big city in the US. Criminals do what they want, you can't legally defend yourself, police are apathetic, and there are places you absolutely shouldn't go right next to places you need/want to go.

I live in the Boston metro area, and traveled to London several times wearing a Rolex. Never an issue did I have; candidly, I felt more at ease wearing in London than I did after-hours in Downtown Crossing.

Chances are you’ll be fine in London. If you’re in and around the city (banking district) you’ll be the odd one out of you’re not wearing one. Yes there’s a few horror stories out there but I’m sure that happens in most major cities

I’ve lived here all my life and worn a Rolex for the best part of 20 years in all parts of town / on public transport etc. ... never had a problem

York is a beautiful city, you’ll have no problems whatsoever there

Enjoy

Your mind is made up as is mine.
No sense in debating a subject not allowed on TRF.
