I've been learning jiujitsu for some years now and there are quite a few police officers training at the school. Your definition could not be further away from the truth.

There are two kinds of people in this world...those that get the "was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor...?" reference and those that don't. Secondly, you have to weigh the value/hassle of taking a day off work and paying for parking, etc. to spend the day in traffic court vs. $90...I am a man of principle and usually fight for what I believe in, but this is a tradeoff. It DOES seem that if you stopped at a reasonable distance behind the crosswalk line, as the other car hesitated, that should count.

i used to live there in PG at Otis Street near the border to DC. i hated that place. Cops got nothing better to do. because i was young before and i drove a 911 i would always get pulled over for no reason and no ticket too. i guess they thought i was dealing or something. young asian guy with a 72k car. thats how it is there. i say fight it. nothing to loose.

This bites. I mean really, really bites.

I'm usually not rational in these types of situations and always revert to my little core principals. So, yes, I would certainly challenge this in court. In fact, I've done so in the past.

Ed, before you decide to go to court you might want to find out the local custom. Some venues will continue the case if the officer doesn't show up the first time, making to take yet another day off. Another indicator of revenue versus safety. Just like red light camaras, safety is always stated as the reason but revenue is the real reason.

its this reality that causes me to drive sh*tboxes these days, even better, just drive a car in dad's name. seems to slip under the radar alot more these days.

although i was never lucky enough to drive a 911, driving any semi modern car with mods was a big red "pull me over" sign to the cops.

MD State PD seem to be crooks if thats who pulled you over, imho. And you are right, theres a whole lot more to take care of but chasing drug dealers doesn't make the state any cash. My wife got pulled over after she stopped at a flashing red near BWI. The 10 cars in front of her blew through it but she got pulled over. Cop gave her 5 sec to find her registration, walked off, then came back with a ticket for running a red and not having registration. Whata punk sonsa....

I assume it's similar all over this country but what Bruno said in February is true, they have to pay the officer more than the citation is worth, makes no sense for the department to loose his/her services for 1/2 a day. Save that for the more serious offenses and move on to the next case.

In the last 6 years I've been cited 4 times, each time the magistrate found me guilty and I had to appeal to a judge. Not once did the officer show. In Massachusetts magistrates rule initially and the officer isn't required. If you appeal to a judge though then the officer has to appear.

They figured it out though, since they know you're going to get off they make you pay a $25 filing fee, and to appeal you have to pay $50, so no matter what your paying the state $75 at least. The only plus is your insurance isn't affected.

Kudos to you for standing up for your rights! I would have done the same.

I've been living in Germany for nearly five years now and have much more respect for German polizei than I do American police. You almost never see German police sitting around (wasting taxpayer money) waiting for someone doing 10mph over the speed limit or possibly rolling through a stop sign at 1mph. Instead, they are out taking care of real police business like keeping cities and towns safe from crime.

This safe environment I've grown accustomed to is going to be difficult to leave (whenever I do return to the US) as I have a 4yr old daughter and I feel she is much safer here. No, that's not true. I KNOW she is much safer here, which is a sad fact and as a US flag waving patriot, that makes me sad.

Speeding is often handled by speed cameras, and the fine is a 'staggering' 10EUR for doing up to 10Km/h over the limit; AND you have to be doing 25km/h over the limit before you have points deducted from your license. Even that fine you can fight though.
Oh, and those stop signs.. Yeah, not many of them in Germany.. Approach the intersection slowly, if there's another car to your right, they have the right-of-way. If it's all clear, feel free to go right on through - or if you happen to be the car on the right.. I've never seen someone pulled over for running a stop sign.

I'll shut up before I get on a soapbox and get a warning - but will say that our police force needs to do a better job of protecting and serving versus finding ways to make money for the city.

That sounds perfectly reasonable. Common sense and improved training prevails.

Very good, sir!

A friend of mine was stopped by a SC Highway Patrol officer once for "rolling" through a stop sign. The officer pulled him over and asked..."Boy, do you know what STOP means?"

My friend: "To cease all motion in every direction."

After the officer stopped blinking about 120, he wrote the guy a ticket.

X2. I once took a day off from work and hauled four families into court because they wouldn't pay $300 to replace my windshield (broken by their drinking 'good' children). Gotta stand up for what's right.

Having been there and done that to all of you who think that Officers write citations to earn revenue either for themselves or for thier city it is not always the case. I will state again that Officers hate going to court. Write more tickets. Spend more time in court. Also the revenue for citations where I worked did not go into the city coffers. It went into the coffers of a place I did not work for. The county. So please educate yourself before you make blanket statement concerning "cops."

Congratulations on your dismissal Ed.

Well said. Having been in the game for almost 10 years, I also hate going to court. Major league PITA, especially when you have to get childcare set up. I don't get a penny from any ticket I write, nor does my department. So, those who dislike police officers because they are doing their jobs should take a look in the mirror. If the cop screwed up,(yes it happens), then go to court and have your day. Most likely, you need to man up and realize you screwed up and got caught.

x2.

I won't compare myself to a soldier in combat; but I remember walking up to a house to ask the occupant to turn down the music because his neighbors were complaining. All I'll say is thank goodness for big trees because the shooting started, (rounds coming my way) prior to me knocking on the door. Ya just never know.

As for not wanting to do much, it was a cop with nothing else to do, that stopped a truck without a license plate that led to the arrest of Timothy McVeigh.

I will only say this regarding soldiers: many of my clients are soldiers. I am always humbled to my core when these guys, with CIBs and things like "Airborne" or "Ranger" on their BDUs look at my three patches in the corner of my office (pd/fire/ems) and say "wow, I could never do any of THOSE!" The first time I heard it I thought they were being polite. the next few times I heard it I didnt know what to say. Now I just smile and change the subject quickly.

And since none of my fellow LEOs will say it, I will:

I HATED traffic duty. DANGEROUS as hell. Traffic stops are one of the three most dangerous calls a cop can take. Why in my RIGHT MIND (or my left mind) would I take joy from them?

(I would submit that fam violence and officer down are the two others). I worked fam violence/sex crimes / special response for years and was happy to only be taking domestics.

Oh, and more than one STOP sign is up in a city because someone's little kid got creamed there. In case you think that cops just wait around for something to do instead of catching 'the real criminals". No, I wont say running a stop sign makes you a criminal.

But it does mean you just took a 3k lb lethal weapon and shoved it through an intersection.

Sorry, I am getting mean in my old age. My apologies, mods. You guys do an awesome job. Ill take that muzzle now, please
