Old saying I live by.......my employer/clients/customers can ask and require me to do many things BUT one thing they cannot tell me is how to spend MY money.

Life is short. Live within your means but buy things you like/want!

Yea, the jet kind of puts this and other notions about a friggin watch into perspective.

Lots of people I know and see don't even care about wristwatches. They care more about their gadgets (cellphones, ipads). So...NO is my answer.

I proudly wear a Rolex almost every single time, but sometimes in my job as a lawyer I would rather prefer a 'quarts' watch
The luxurious feeling that you get when wearing a Rolex is not always a positive thing if you ask me. For some clients I'd rather hide the watch than proudly show it.
Does anyone recognize this?
I would like to hear your stories!

Post 46 is my fav so far.

Wear an Omega if a Rolex is an issue.

I can envision certain situations where I might be embarrassed about wearing a really expensive watch. But not a Rolex.

I know exactly what you are saying! Sometimes it brings "unwanted attention" which actually makes for an awkward situation. Its very hard to explain but I know where you are coming from.

Alternatives: an old Omega Speedmaster "Moon Watch" or the Patek Nautilus.
Was thinking the same thing. I am looking to get a 15400 for the suit. Twice the price of my sub with half the looks. And the ppl that would spot it are likely enthusiasts.

But so far I wear my sub everyday literally with no problem. (Office to gym to snowmobiling) The above is more of an excuse for the next purchase lol

I wear mine every day and I am a Financial Advisor. I notice clients all the time checking it out. I earned the right to wear it over the years in dealing with clients and the markets. I wear it with pride. You should too. Success is the best revenge. Cheers !

I don't flaunt my watches....nor do I shy away when someone asks if that's a Rolex

Since I'm getting older, I stopped caring what others think, I do what I want, and wear what I want.

A lot of interesting responses so far. If I were an attorney, doctor, or financial adviser I would not hesitate to wear on a regular basis. If my financial adviser is wearing a Casio and driving a Toyota Corolla, I'll be looking for a new adviser.

That being said, I own/operate a concrete batch plant and don't wear it to work. It's a blue collar environment and I have no problem with that. Besides the certain doom/trashing my watch would take, my drivers will be looking for more money constantly, and my customers that come in to the office will think I'm making too much money and charging them too much for concrete.

Out of the office I wear it constantly. At first I thought everyone would notice I was wearing a [gasp] Rolex, then I realized that most people don't pay that much attention. Usually the only ones that seem to notice are other Rolex or watch enthusiast.

I'm a corporate attorney. I wear a Rolex generally every day. Most of our clients can afford a Rolex, and many do. So, I don't every think about it like that.

As a Corolla driver, ouch!

I've read through a few of these threads over the past little while and I've come around a little bit. I mean, situational awareness is important, but at the end of the day, I think we are way overstating how apt people are to notice what kind of watch you're wearing. A gold DD - ok, that's one thing, but a regular SS Rolex - most people don't notice unless you draw their attention to it.

I work in HR for a manufacturing organization, so I deal with a lot of people who may not be making a lot or in a great financial situation. Part of my ability to be successful is the ability to build relationships and develop trust on the part of the people I work with. I worry sometimes that wearing an expensive watch or wear expensive clothes (not worrying about an expensive car though.. ) could alienate me, but to be honest, I don't think anyone's ever really noticed.

You know. Being as young as I am, I've experienced some embarrassment whilst wearing mine. Met a girl the other night at a bar close to a university and she commented that only old people and D-bags wear rolexes. Kind of made me ashamed of being so fortunate. But then I thought, most people my age can barely find jobs, let alone well paying ones. I just count my blessings and move on. Besides, I moved on to another.

With that being said, I wear mine for "me", not anyone else. I've had it for 3 years and while others have noticed, commented, and asked about it, I've never brought it to anyones attention (besides my wife).

Regardless of what people on this message board want to believe, it rubs A LOT of people the wrong way. Does that mean they are right? Of course not but it's good to be aware that negative things could come out of it.

So depending on which family / friends I am with, yes, I do feel uncomfortable.
I'm in your lot Sir. Couldn't have said it better myself, exactly what's in my head. For me, it's especially hard when you see a person who can't afford to eat, and you know your watch can feed them for a year or more. Regardless of what circumstances brought them to their situation.

Although admirable, with your way of thinking your car would feed them for 5 yrs, your ring if you wear one, 3 mnths, your shoes a month and on and on... Just help the hungry if you wish, don't feel shameful that you're not

You have a valid point there. I do a fair share of volunteer work, but always feel I can do more I guess. Unfortunately, there's a lot to be done where I live.

No matter how much we do, WE can ALWAYS do more. Just the fact that you do more than throw a buck in a cup makes you better than most.

I have to admit that even if I have been a Rolex wearer for more than twenty years I felt a little shy when I began to sport my Daytona on a daily bases and thus I kept keeping it hidden under my sleeves. Now I simply don't care and I enjoy it much more not caring about that silliness.

Other than on certain specific occasions where wearing bling might be inappropriate, just wear what you like. People will always think what they want. It will be stressful to live your life always trying to please strangers or conform to what they like to see.

Yep, I can relate. I am a lawyer and money manager but also work with various charities and homeless folks. I handle this dilemma in one of three ways, depending on the situation:

1) Don't care....wear my YM Blue without any worries or concerns. (95% of the time)
2) If concerned, then adjust the 5mm Easylink tighter so the watch sits higher up my wrist, out of sight, tucked under the cuff of my suit and biz shirt. (4% of the time)
3) If I am really concerned about offending someone, then I bag the YM and wear an Omega 300M Sea Master (which is NOT on any radar screens). (1% of the time)

By the way, this issue is exactly why I did not buy a two-tone model. The added gold bezel or bracelet or dial is not worth the hassle and attention.....versus the all-stainless and platinum design of the YM Blue. My watch is rarely noticed by anyone....perfect for me!

Thanks,
David

I am the principle negotiator for some of our corporate deals, we defend our position on not making big profits so it is just easier not to draw attention by my watch. I will wear my GP/Omega which is unlikely to draw attention. I must say having had a TT Daytona now for a month it has probably drawn a dozen comments from colleagues and others (and no i don't find reasons to drag it into discussions), my SS watches all flew under the radar by comparison (don't think I had ever had a comment before).

I am sure we all wear our Rolex for ourselves, but it is sometimes easier not to draw attention to yourself in certain corporate situations (it does not worry me around work mates). Personally I think my Sub carries less visible "Rolexness" than either my old Datejust or my Daytona, despite the sub being probably the most famous Rolex.

I suspect my next PP will fly under the radar more even if it costs more.
