SA has some problems but what country does not? At the end of the day it is one of the most beautiful countries on earth and I would always recommend it as a travel destination to everyone. It is not the Wild West by any stretch of the imagination.
Great post agree 100% ^^^^^^

This kind of incident can happen in any big city in America. Chicago, NY, Memphis, LA etc. People need to be street wise and know about the area. Takes a little time to get aware, also just some good old common sense. I’ve been in more than a few high crime or shady areas, and its just a matter of taking off your watch in putting it in your pocket.

Men and women have the same problem, in addition to watches, rings, jewelry, and even expensive phones all are prone to this kind of theft. Many instances of gold chains, or expensive necklaces ripped right off of someones neck. You are even vulnerable in a car at a red light, break the window and snatch a necklace or a purse, it happens a lot more than you realize.

Bottom line....be smart do your research and plan accordingly. Good judgement and intuition works great too....if you feel uneasy then act on it.

My mom left SA in the ‘60s. We have occasionally gone to visit family there. SA is beautiful, but razor wire seems to be their biggest industry, and house and car alarms is the dominant sound in Cape Town.

Sad.

I think some people literally have no idea how beautiful SA is. I've seen a lot of the world and SA really really really impressed me.

To each his own and if you don't feel safe no problem. But don't act like you are traveling to some war-ridden region.

Plenty of people are scared of traveling to Europe because of several attacks the past few years. People think you'll get robbed in plain sight in Barcelona, Naples or Paris because of what they hear. Go figure. Let fear dictate your life.

Agreed ^^^^ Cape Town is one the most beautiful places on earth IMO. Camps Bay, Clifton. Beautiful country, it's dangerous if you're not careful though.

I notice many of the people saying they’d never visit SA are here in the states.

...we live in the most dangerous developed country in the world.

Explore. Leave your comfort zone. Don’t wear shiny things if there is a doubt. The world is bigger than the USA, and the USA is much more dangerous than you give it credit for. I’ve been to South Africa twice, and it’s probably one of my favorite countries in the world (current country count is 41.) Amazing place, amazing people, you just have to watch your six in the big cities and know where you are and are going.

We love visiting Napa a couple of times each year, and my wife and I both think the beauty of SA wine lands are second to none.

The difference being violent crime in the US is high but also confined to certain areas, which unless you are specifically looking for or live in, you are unlikely to be affected by.

Having lived in a nice beach side community outside of L.A., spending 10 years in Colorado in various places, 9 years in Nashville and traveling the southeast extensively... it’s not that confined.

I do know racers from SA now living in US. The cities can have criminals like these in the video - but the same can be said of any large urban environ.

As much as we’d like to debate statistics, just remember that numbers go out the window when the crime comes to you in an area you considered safe. Hope they’re caught and watch recovered.

So sad and unfortunate. Did the right thing and gave it up without getting physically hurt.
What would you guys have done in this situation?
