116520 White dial vs. 118239 White roman or Meteorite diamond

Former flipper here who hasn't made a purchase in almost 4 years but continues to follow TRF regularly.

I recently gifted my NOS Exp1 to my son (when he turned 21 this year) and SD 16600 to my daughter (when she turned 17 one month later). I was surprised how nice the SD on nato looks on her tiny wrist. They only wear them on special occasions, for now.

Gifting to loved ones is far more rewarding than any incoming. It was a pretty cool moment; made me miss my old man 😊

That brings me to this post. I'm left with 16610LV, 16710, and my love/hate relationship with my 116520 white dial, the only watch I bought from an AD for my 40th. Maybe it's a bit blingy, maybe because I don't use the chronograph function; I really don't know why I love it on certain days and some days not so much. Legibility is not an issue for me and it fits my small wrist great.

It has served as my dressier watch. I've contemplated unloading it a few times but it hasn't happened yet. With the strong resale/trade value I'm yet again considering replacing it with the above-mentioned WG DD.

Please share your thoughts and wisdom lol... Alternatively, I can keep my current trio. TIA!

Very nice gifting to your children, Well done... I was never a Daytona guy and cant say I am a WG40 guy either, maybe some day. I say do it so you can let me know how good it really is and if PM is really worth it, hehe.. Sounds like it is from other owners.
Being a former flipper have you owned a WG DD ?

One of the nicest dials for the 118239 also is the silver diamond with emeralds on 6 and 9.

This would be my first PM piece and first 36mm. Tough decision since it's tough to find and try on one with the Meteorite dial.

Ya I'll bet. When I think of the DD I'd like to at least see a WG40 with the silver quadrant roman dial.

I would definitely get the WG DD. I'd go for a meteorite dial

Hi John. I still remember when you sold/traded it for the platona and haven't looked back

That looks nice TFS! Definitely leaning towards 36mm DD WG or maybe platinum. Can't decide on the metal and dial combo

Thanks! A platinum DD is my grail on a dress watch; if you can get one even better!

Thank you, Dan. Definitely an option as the Daytona should hold its value, but I hate for it to just in the safety box.

I too have serious issues with my 116520. However been holding off as feelings pass and will not be able to source another in our lifetimes. Lol. The 116520 is and always will be the first Daytona with the in-house movement and walks the line better than the current models on the dressy-sporty continuum. It’s also very water resistant making it a great vacation watch. However legibility is a problem. Compare to the current Rolex offerings (BLRO and BLNR with jubilee) hulks, 43mm SD with massive lugs on the sport watches I don’t find the 116520 blingy at all. It even stands out far less than the black/white version now due to the incredibly stark contrast in colors.

To your dilemma. You have a solid and balanced rotation. If you consider flipping, I would keep a chrono in the stable and look hard at the navitimer reissue or perhaps an AP chrono, or even the VC overseas chrono. The DD is a great watch, but certainly more in the dressy side-not that there is anything wrong with that.
