Sumariner rumour from my AD today...
Hello Everyone,
So, as many of you may be guessing, we all suspect that at BASELWORLD this year, Rolex will be unveiling the new SS Submariner (with ceramic bezel, new clasp, maxi-dial, maxi-case etc.). I went into my AD today to potentially purchase a Sub-date (16610) in case Rolex decides to discontinue the current model, replacing it with the new SS Sub. My AD said that Rolex will not be making / releasing the existing SS Sub any more, and that he made a last "order" to get as many as he can. At any rate, he also said that he believes that the new SS Sub price will increase to about $9000 Canadian (from $6980 Canadian)!!! That's almost a 29% price increase!!! Now, I don't know if this was true, or whether he was trying to scare me into buying the Submariner on the spot, but if it is true, then I may be buying used Rolexes going forward... |

My guess is the cost for the new Sub would be in line with the GMTIIC. BUt i am in the same boat, my next Rolex will be pre-loved. I will let someone else take the initial hit. I also have to say i am starting to look at other brands, particularly Breitling, as Rolex continues to make their huge price increases annually.

Not sure if that is true or not, but today an AD in Toronto told me that the Explorer I is also being discontinued. Can anyone confirm/deny these rumors?

Along with the rollout of the new Sub, they will also roll out the price list for it.. They will also adjust any existing prices that they are planning on too.
You can expect the Sub to list for 250 to 500 bucks above whatever the GMT IIc is listed at.. In today's world, that would mean a SS Sub at 7500USD - Canadian prices are about 18% higher.......but it won't hit the shelves until late this year ore early next, and another price hike will likely be there then.. So my simple math says that the Sub will be crowding 8,000USD by Christmas... so, Merry Christmas.... Oh....... I can't believe that they would drop the Explorer, one of the most popular watches in Rolex history......

The value of the dollar has stayed low, so those increases are what you'd expect if you purchased from Europe. This is the same with BMW, and Land Rover parts from overseas.
Strange my paycheck doesn't reflect a weak dollar. |

Larry, that's some scary math...but it makes sense. Unfortunately, I think I will be priced out of buying a brand new Rolex for some time if the prices are truly that high.
I should show my boss that math, and ask for a raise... |

Maybe I'm in the vast minority, but I think it's possible that Rolex is really pushing the envelope on pricing for an all stainless sports watch. At $7500.00 you could buy about 3 really nice pre-owned 18K/SS Datejusts. But I'm sure I'll be proven wrong and they won't be able to make them fast enough. |

I would not be surprised to see a 10-12% price increase. Anything much beyond that is a bit much for an economy coming out of a recession IMHO.

My AD is expecting the price of the new sub to be around $6800 USD...just below the current price of the GMT IIc. He also believes the dealers will start seeing them in late April or early May as Rolex is already out of the 16610 and will not stand for their most popular model being unavailable for 6 months plus.
That is his estimation after speaking with his rep, so take it with a grain of salt. That being said, he has been pretty much spot on the last couple of years in terms of Basel changes. |

Larry is right, the new Sub will list for about a few bucks over the GMT II-C. If you look at Sheldon's historical price list, the 16710 listed for $5,750 (last list price for this discontinued model) and the 16610 listed for $5,850. With that being said, ~$7,000 is up there. I'll stick with my trusty 16610.

Obviously they are going to discontinue production of the current SS Sub if the new ceramic Sub is coming out. Why do you think it was just a ploy to get you to buy the current Sub? Would you rather have him tell you to wait and then be upset when you can't get one?

What would you do if they did not release a new SS Sub?? Who knows what they are going to do. I expect them to but until they do we have what we have--and that is not a bad watch--a classic symbol for Rolex!!

It will be more ...
It will be more than the GMTIIC in SS because of the Glidelock Clasp. My wag is $7500 USD.

as Rolex keeps these prices on the rise they will be able to sell fewer watches and make just as much money. I also agree with $7500 for new sub ceramic.

Yep, and predictions for pricing of the new sub ended up being spot on, and now, with the so called shortage, it's even higher
