I think social media and the rise of watch blogs/ magazines aka hodinkee, worn and wound etc. is the reason for this. I definitely was caught up with the hype at one point of "this watch is the one because so and so said." The sooner you get out of that trap the better it is because you can actually enjoy watches you like despite the crowd.

And also I'm still biased on rolex SS watches lol.

Why would anyone care what model other people like as their background and taste is meaningless.
Probably the thing that Rolex BUYERS, not WEARERS, care about, is what will others will think of their taste instead of self conviction. Absurd as it is.

Its also amazing so many will answer who have never tied on the watch in question. But its all opinion and we all are entitled to that.

I think some people fear buying a watch that is unpopular and they need validation that folks like it before they buy it. Strange the world we live in.

Agreed... Young kids these days...they need to be told what music to listen to and what watches to like. Pathetic times we live in. Sad really.

I strongly believe that everyone should buy whatever watch they want and feel comfortable wearing, but basically people want to hear suggestions from others and i do not think it's such a bad thing.

I think people ask because they can’t physically try any watch they want at an AD because of the current situation ,so asking people here gives them some insight about the watch they wanna buy . Ofcourse negative comments don’t help. We all know that we should buy what we like and all of that but getting a second opinion is not a crime. A newbie like me would love to know from the experts here about watches they have worn and how it has evolved their collection etc.

this cant be a serious question. and some of these responses....

this has been going on since I joined the forum. in fact it has been going on since the dawn of time.

marketing is potentially one of the largest single industries known to mankind.

forums were literally created so that people could bounce ideas off of each other. and YES, people are effected by what other people want and like. it is called human nature. and it is literally a fact of life.

This is not new to mankind and it most certainly is not new to TRF either.

Personally, I love to get other peoples opinions. And, just like most humans, I am swayed by other peoples thoughts and comments. Clearly, if you know anything about me, I buy what I want and like. But for certain I will ask for other opinions.

This is especially true now when you can't just walk in and see the majority of the watches people want.

Think a lot of members hit the nail on the head with the responses. People just want to fit in, they want to buy the watch the general public likes. It’s more external acceptance which leads to internal satisfaction. Oddly enough, if that’s what the individual is seeking it isn’t technically wrong either.

I’m more on the agreeance with buy whatever watch appeals to you and like the watch for the watch rather than social acceptance.

Why does this forum care so much about what watch other people like??

Some valid points here. I’ve definitely done some this or that reference comparison post and as some have stated it is simply based on not having one of them available to look at. 5 digit vs 6. I could care less who approves of what is on my wrist. There are thousands of posts daily and some that I read the title and ask myself what the point is but it’s a forum. Sure years ago you could walk in to an AD and see most if not all the Rolex offerings but times are not like that anymore.

With that being said, I do agree that the individuals who ask which watch so that they are wearing the “in” watch or seeking validation by getting the popular watch is not the way I’d make my watch buying decisions. I just wouldn’t generalize the forum as I have been able to get valuable insights on various subjects.

It's interesting the posts here, to add to the discussion, the last few years i have tried on a watch at other than my regular AD (they know better), I have been told that "there is a mirror over there, if you would like to see how it looks on you" or words to that affect. I personally don't care how it looks to others and i can certainly see how it looks on my wrist. Each to his own but this wave of wearing watches purely as fashion accessories where they are sometimes not even set or wound is laughable in my humble opinion.

I have found that whenever you try on Rolexes in the store they look a whole lot more beautiful than anywhere else. It's almost like they have a jewelry-like glow.

I think most of the time it has to do with people wanting to hear about how someone else who may have owned the watch liked or disliked it. The decision can be made by imagination or surrogation. Many say surrogation leads to better results for most people. Of course, they also say people are happier with a decision if it is irrevocable, which kind of helps explains why people keep flipping from one hot model to another and seem unsatisfied. If people could not flip a submariner and get most of their money back, once they buy the watch they would probably enjoy it more since the decision was final.

NPR in the US did a great piece on this. The audio and transcript are online. Not sure if anyone will be interested, but here is a link to the article. I think a lot of it applies to Rolex collectors in many ways.

I think I can explain this. I used to buy sneakers that I like and I like and leave it deadstock, now the adidas shoes price drop like crazy. I will just tell them I am not resell it, I am just gonna wear it. but watch is such expensive item, people just want to buy something that holds value and recognizable.

No kidding! One’s own opinion should be first and foremost when about to spend thousands of dollars (or other currency)!

I believe that with Rolex buying the right watch amounts to having ones ego enhanced. I bought a X and it is appreciating like crazy, I made a perfect choice; I'm just so perfect.

I have young kids and it was a dear subject in our household. Same goes with new puppies the first few months.

Is the OP for real? You never discuss with other people in the world which watch you should choose? Have you never heard of talking through a difficult decision even in matters of taste? Is it possible that the opinions of others might highlight something that you agree with but have not been able to articulate to yourself about the aesthetics of a watch?

It’s a watch forum for the love of god. What’s wrong with having a discussion with presumably like-minded people about what looks good, what aspects of a watch are important, what’s likely to grate over time or be more appreciated over time?

Do you think that the only valid way to make a decision about what watch to buy is to lock yourself in a windowless room and... what? contemplate it deeply in your own mind until the answer materializes as a platonic truth?

I think I am real??? I have absolutely never taken a poll to decide what watch to buy or what watch would be the best investment ever since this forum started. If I don’t know I like the watch, I simply don’t buy a watch. Knowing what watch I like will haunt me for months (or years) before I eventually purchase it. To me this is like walking into a bar as a alcoholic and asking the entire bar what drink am I the thirstiest for.

What a great idea! The next time I go to my tavern I’m going to ask that question....they might give me a great drink suggestion...something I’ve never tried ....and it just may end up being my new favorite!
