Need Advice on Trade DD36 to DD40
Hi everyone,
I am looking to trade my DD36 YG White Roman 118238 for a new DD40 YG 228238 (undecided on dial). What can I expect to get for the DD36 in its current condition (see pics)? It’s been worn but it’s definitely not in bad shape. Never been polished, I’m the original owner and have box, papers, original warranty card and receipt. Also, I’m not looking to sell it on here, please don’t PM with offers. I want to do the trade with my AD, just looking for guidance on what I can expect from someone who has purchased recently. It is my understanding that you can still get a discount, albeit a smaller one than in years past, on these pieces. Thanks!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

probably like 14k from a grey, if full set. less from an AD i would assume
you also probably won't get as much of a discount on the 40 from an AD as you would from a grey. imo trading with a grey would be the best route for this but you could easily make that decision once you find out the numbers |

I’d keep that over a 40 any day especially if you’ve owned it since new. If you decide to get rid of it I’d sell it privately you’ll get more that way and pick up a nice used one from a grey you’ll get an all around better deal that way.

I think the DD was always perfect at 36 and Rolex knows it.

I’ve had it for over 10 years but it really has little sentimental value. I guess from a value standpoint it doesn’t make sense to trade, I thought it was closer to $20K . The real question now is how to change it up a bit since I’m bored of it, maybe a new dial Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Buy a different dial and get a quality brown or black leather strap. The DD is a pleasure to mod. |

I don’t think you should get rid of your DD36 as you will not get as much on it as you think (11-12k at an AD likely).
Save up for the DD40 and add it |

add a nice diamond bezel at 3-4 carats it will make the watch appear much bigger.

Wow, personally that looks perfect on your wrist; I'd stick with it!!! As far as guidance you should talk to an AD and see what they say. If you bought it from an AD that is where I'd start. Ask several to try to get the best deal. |

Ironically, I dropped of my 36mm DD into my AD, so it could be sent away to have the dial changed and as per Rolex policy also have a service.
I found that the champagne dial with the Date & Day discs which had a yellow background to difficult to read. So I am going for a silver dial with lume baton. While I was there, I tried on a 40mm and though it was lovely, for me just a tad to big for my 6 ¾ inch wrist. Price wise I would say around the £12,000

It never hurts to dream. Go on Bob's site, match your watch to several of the ones he has listed, and see what the amount he will pay for the same watch. Frequently, on line buyers will find "flaws" with the watch once they have it and offer less or send it back to you. Go to a couple of NYC resellers and see what they will give you.

A dealer going to give you 10k trade in value they're the worst. Like others said keep what you have it's perfect!! The grass isn't greener on the other side.

In this moment in chrono24 are a nice full set for 18k, the AD would offer you like 10 or 12k, no more, in a trade.

Send it to Rolex and have them install a champagne dial and you’re all done.

I wouldn’t trade it, keep it and add a 40 later if you can. Not enough of a difference.

Need Advice on Trade DD36 to DD40
If you want the DD40 get it. I used to have a 36MM and now have the 40 and am super glad to have made the move. The new one has a way better power reserve, more durable bracelet and just more wrist presence without sacrificing proportions. It’s a great watch, a total keeper, there is nothing more iconic than a YG Day Date. You would never wear the 36 if you get the 40. I only wish I’d have given mine to the wife.
As for the pricing, the estimates on this thread are so far apart it should be proof that you need to shop around. The 40 needs to be bought at a good discount from MSRP which is pretty easy to achieve and you need to get a fair price for yours. If you get a piece you love and enjoy for a long time don’t let $ stand in the way. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I would not be discouraged by the numbers because at worst case, you keep a great watch. At best case, you shop around and find a deal that you can live with. I would contact several of our Trusted Sellers and see what they tell you on trade value and what they will take for the watch you want. I would also see what the AD can do as they only have 62% of a new DD in cost. Many AD's can be very aggressive in pricing when they choose too. I would get all the facts and figures and then see where you are. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Everyone,
After seeing the numbers being thrown out here, it doesn’t make sense to trade the watch, even if I get a double digit discount on the new one. I’m leaning towards changing the dial, just to change things up a bit. And I’m going to shop around for a different PM DD40, maybe WG with Blue Roman Dial. It seems like these move at 18-22% off, sometimes more. I’ll keep y’all posted. |

Your best bet is to sell it first to a used watch dealer. I have found the worst case scenario is to trade a watch at an AD. They usually just wholesale it out and want to make a few bucks on the deal as well so their offer is very low. Plus, the trade blurs what you could have bought the new watch for in cash. You end up paying full retail for the new watch where you could have gotten some full cash discount. Get your cash and then buy the new watch. This way you know all the real numbers.

Agree with the 14k trade in, but try to sell locally

Would be also my idea, keep the classic DD and change the dial if you want something new. Good luck

Your benchmark should be:
You should expect a credit for no more than half of the going market value for the same used DD36. Not new. The internet will tell you the going market price for your used DD36. The new DD40 should have a 15% discount. So, subtract the DD36 credit off of the discounted price for the DD40, and you end up with what you should expect to pay. |

It’s my understanding that if I want to have Rolex perform the work, the dial has to be one that was available for my specific watch, so that rules out anything truly “funky.” I think Champaign is always a tried and true classic, and I could definitely see myself getting some use out of it with a Champaign dial. I’m not sure about the hour markers though. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
