TIME SETTING- Clockwise / Counter-Clockwise
Hunting for Air-Kings this week, I noticed that some of the very slightly older models, like around the late nineties set by turning the crown counter-clockwise, while the newer models set clockwise, which is what I'm used to with my other Rolex.
Can anyone please tell me when that changed, and which no-date calibre was the former, used in the mid-late 90's that set counter-clockwise? Thanks, fellas!

I no sure I'm understanding the question here. Is this about setting the time...like by rotating the windng crown? On my 114060...I can rotate either CW or CCW to move the hands to set the time. Sorry for the dumb question...

To set the time forward (advance the hands), turning the crown clockwise is the norm now. However, on some past calibres and the current Sky-Dweller, as indicated in the chart above, the time was advanced by turning the crown counter clockwise.

Oh...I see what being addressed...not which direction you should turn the hands to set the time...rather, which direction do the hands turn when you rotate the crown either CW or CCW. Thanks.

Dr. Alpino - That is an AWESOME list ! Thank you.
I've gone ladies DJ shopping for my wife and when I make small talk about how the 2235 is the opposite of most current gents models, I would say less than 50% of the salespeople knew this until I told them. This list is the definitive resource - STICKY TIME ! |

Putting this thread back to life!
I just noticed something when setting the time on my SD4k: When turning the crown clockwise, hands are moving forward, following any slight movement of the crown and staying in place when i stop touching the crown. But when turning the crown counter-clockwise, there is kind of a "spring effect". Hands are moving backwards but coming back forward of about half a minute when i stop touching the crown. Not sure if i'm clear in my explanation, but if you do understand: Is it normal?? |

When you move the geartrain with the crown, you must take up all of the lash. When the watch is running all of the lash is taken up via the mainspring. Turning the crown backwards, you take up that lash in the opposite direction from the mainspring tension; when you let go of the crown, the mainspring tension will pull the geartrain until the lash is again taken up in the running direction.
