A lot of criticism in this thread, some deservedly so. But you guys realize that the vast majority of people who know that a Rolex is a watch, have no idea what a mechanical watch is, right?

Just an FYI. It is 2019. Everyone has the internet. Rolex has a very detailed website featuring their watches and how they are made. Anyone interested in a Rolex watch should log on to the Rolex website. It is free to access and can teach you all about the mechanics of the movement. So there really are no valid excuses to remain ignorant on the subject.

Yeah, thanks. I should’ve thought of that.

Agreed. And really, how many of us log onto a forum and tell the members why we don’t like their product? For example, I didn’t log onto the Mercedes forum and criticize their passion and then tell them I’m not buying a Mercedes. I mean, who does that?

No one, not even the OP.

So, it’s a troll.

Certainly one of the more bizarre threads here in awhile, IMO

If it's a once weekly wear, put it on a watch winder. Always fully wound and ready to roll. Eco Drive it ain't. Mechanical watches have soul, not circuitry.

And we're back good people! (and the D-bags too)

Listen... I came on here to learn... and in between the sarcastic posts I am learning. I've learned that Rolex did produce a watch, possibly in the 90's (Oyster Quartz) which runs on a battery. Thank you to the two members who suggested them. That is a good option to me. I won't find replacing a battery every 1-2 years as inconvenient as regularly winding and setting one.

Since checking back in tonight... some of you have mentioned watch winders. Knowing nothing about watches, I've never heard of such a thing (all the D-bags shake your heads now!). I'll watch some YouTube videos now. This could be my best alternative.

Some of you seem to feel like this site is only for watch and/or Rolex aficionados, but I don't think that's the case. If so, the moderators should make some sort of an entry quiz or something. If you don't pass, you can't join! Until then, anyone can join and ask their questions. I also do think it's just intended for people who live and breath Rolex. Some of you seem to feel I've insulted the integrity of the brand with my question. Or that I've put the brand down... I'm considering buying one, so how would I be putting the brand down?? That's kind of a bizarre reaction. For those of you who love this brand like your children, enjoy that. But I have a lot of other interests in my life besides this. Buying a Rolex is something I've considered, I'm here to learn, and thankfully I've learned it might not be the right choice for me. But I've also learned there's a device which may keep my watch wound, and so I'll head in that direction. I appreciate the thoughtful replies. Thank you to those who haven't dismissed for my "basic" question. I've also appreciated the humor as well. But I don't feel like any lesser of a person for asking my question and/or not knowing the answer. And as I've said in another post... sure I could spend hours scouring the internet to find the answer without posting it here. But my time is valuable and this got me the information a lot quicker, and a few laughs. Cheers!

Go buy yourself a battery powered replica. I hear they never need winding.

Try a Wolf watch winder. They have single-gang watch winders, and when you don't wear the watch, it takes care of keeping it running for you. I have a few watches from Rolex on rotation and I have a two-gang winder. I occasionally hand wind for the fun of it, but there's really no reason to ever have to if you invest in a winder.

On the other hand, I'd suggest just wearing it daily instead of on select occasions. Once you get it on and get adjusted to it, it may feel just right, and naked to have it off.

Another way to put that is, buy the Rolex that you can't quit looking at because you like it on your wrist so much.

Go Dawgs

Buy a no date sub and a $150 amazon watch winder.

99.99% of people wont notice your watch and the other .01% wont let on that they noticed your watch.

Troll or worse. You are saying there is a direct comparison between winding and quality? You are 40? That is sad. Based on your post, I believe that your trying to invoke emotion out of forum members. By the way, nobody will be impressed by your watch. But if you need it to feel a sense of purpose, by all means.

I have 4-6 Rolex watches in rotation at any given time. The only watch anyone has ever complimented me wearing was a TT GMT. So if you want to be noticed get a bluesy ref 116613LB if I'm not mistaken, and an Orbita Sparta winder off Amazon.

You’re taking some flack here, but what do you expect? You can go ahead and buy a Rolex, and be happy with the feeling that you’re perhaps impressing people, but you don’t understand, love or covet watches, so why do it? I don’t mean to judge, and you of course have every right to spend your money how you please, but why not just get a really expensive suit, or a killer sports car, or an expensive ring, etc? There are plenty of other ways that might appeal to you better than a watch would, since you don’t seem to have the “watch gene”.

Most people who frequent watch forums, like this one, don’t read and learn and talk about watches to impress people... although granted that is part of the experience for some, and it’s natural to look for recognition of approval... rather, they do it because they truly love watches and that’s something you just can’t explain to people who don’t.

Stick with your Citizen... they make a great watch... I actually had a solar powered, multi-function Citizen back in my student days, but I later gave it to my brother because even though he could afford anything he wanted, he loved the technology in that Citizen. I now buy the watches I have always wanted because now I can afford to... hard to say who is smarter or happier between us. You might actually say that we both are.

Cheers

Ross

Buy a red Ferrari. Ditch the mundane Mercedes. A Ferrari will make your friends say "wow!" more than any 12K Rolex. And since you are in Florida it is something you can use to impress people all year around. As you said you are wealthy, have no debt and have no children. This is the perfect solution to your dilemma.

So, OP, a couple of points, if I may. First, this is a forum for watch and Rolex afficiandos. That said, there there are always new members or passer by types asking rookie level questions. This forum is loaded with folks that know a ton about both - watches in general and specifically Rolex. Most of the time answers to such questions are very matter of fact and straightforward. Yes, there are a few supreme smartasses here as well. However, point two, when you lead with “I’m buying a Rolex to impress people,” you just flipped all the switches mostly because of point one. True watch people aren’t super interested in those interested in point two.

All that aside, get a winder and your watch, enjoy both. Good luck and Go Dawgs.

OP, there’s a saying: Better to Remain Silent and Be Thought a Fool than to Speak and Remove All Doubt.

I hope your posts are just tongue in cheek, otherwise you have just proved the truth in that saying.

Wait until the OP finds out the mechanical watch won't be as accurate as the really cheap watches.

OP introduced him/her self as a person who is interested in buying a Rolex to merely to impress others, and then asked for opinions as to whether he should nix this because he just discovered that Rolex has a mechanical movement and really didn't want to spend 12k on a watch that doesn't have a battery.

His subsequent post bragged about how how well he has done financially.

OP's most recent post calls forum members "D-bags" for taking issue with his self lauding braggart attitude and his failure to even google Rolex before asking for advice.

OP ends by stating that his time is "too valuable" to educate himself and admits that his post was intended to "get a few laughs."

Let's think about that for a minute. OP has been a member for 1 month but thinks he is entitled to call other members "D-bags" for responding the way he expected.

OP is either a troll or needs to work on his delivery. In either event, a short course on basic manners and courtesy would not hurt.

I've had a couple of Citizen Eco-Drive watches and found it quite inconvenient to keep them running because I didn't wear them outdoors enough. I got tired of putting them under a lamp or on the window sill to keep them charged. Both were complicated watches with lots of functions I never used and if they went dead, setting them was a major project that required the book that came with them.. On the other hand, I've never had to wind my Submariner because I wear it 24/7. Sold the Citizen watches on Ebay cause I'm really a one watch guy.
