Is Explorer II considered a land or air piece?

Is Explorer II considered a land or air piece? Since it has a GMT complication, it should be considered as air piece, right?

It’s land as it was designed for spelunking. The 24 hour hand was added because when you’re deep in a cave you can’t tell if it’s day or night outside.

The purpose of the explorer 2 is easily found in online searches.

It was developed as a tool for cave explorers who during their deep explorations might go many days without seeing the outside and lose track of day or night.

It is not a "GMT complication", there is no such thing. GMT is the name of a watch, Explorer II is the name of a watch.

They both have a dual-time complication to use as it fits your lifestyle.

It should have been named the Cave-Dweller, but that didn't have as a romantic connotation as the dive watches. So Explorer 2 it was. The 24hr hand isn't for reference of a GMT or even second time zone, it's just to really let you know if it's day or night while you're doing cave type explorations for days on in. As such, this is why the bezel is a static one and not a rotational one like the GMT Master 2.
Of course since it's adjustable independent of the watch's standard hand, you can benefit by using it to track a second timezone as you desire.
Cool watch.

What if it's cloudy and raining?

There must be hundreds if not thousands of Speleologists who need an expensive watch to scrape and bash around and in caves :)

The most uninspiring and ill conceived marketing uses of the Exp2. Why did they not market it better? Surely, they could have said it is for use by people who are on expeditions crossing multiple timezones where communications require reference to a universal time zone and for use in high latitudes where night and day become indistinct. Or for use in space, where a universal time is needed and night and day indication.

The answer to the OPs question is it’s a useful fashion piece these days.

I'd consider underground land, FWIW. Not that I care. I use it when I travel as a dual time zone watch. It works for air for me as well. I also wear it at times when swimming so it works for sea, too. It's your basic all around watch.

What's with this land sea air thing anyway?

I work in a big mining co. Nobody uses an Exp II. The users that I see around me are mostly common people that does not have to do with the industry.
