If you believe that this is about goals you have misread. It's about the child's (now adult's) appreciation and responsibility. Do as you please and let me know how it works out for you.

When my Dad passed away years ago, he did not leave anything of value or collectible or sentimental to me or my brother. He did not wear a watch or ring. He was just not into jewelry.

I wanted to change that. That is probably the #1 reason I got into watches. I my first purchase was the TT Sub, my oldest son was ga ga over it and I told him when he graduates from college it will be his graduation present from me. That is what I did and he cherishes the watch. When son #2 graduated he got my SS Daytona. Weill it was not easy for my daughter, I bought her a new Cartier roadster with the salmon dial. They all love it and cherish it and will never sell it, I hope. So to the OP, buying a watch now when your son is a baby may not be in his best interest or just an alternative to your thinking.

This every time. Most kids would pick a smart watch or no watch over a $10K Rolex.

Kids grow up and no smartwatch made today will be around in 5 years. I understand the financial advantage of an investment over a watch, but many here already have the money side of supporting a child adequately covered and are looking for something with a bit more sentiment.

Here's something nobody has said ever. "A mutual fund!!!!, thanks Dad this is the best Christmas ever..."

It’s pretty simple really. Some of us have spent many years building relationships and paying full retail price when greys we’re selling under retail. When demand starts to exceed supply, that loyalty is rewarded and first time buyers are largely de prioritised in favour of long term loyal customers.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me, although I understand the frustration of those trying to get on the ladder at a difficult time.

Given that trends and tastes vary wildly over the years, and as this is ultimately about your son and not you, why not go for a classic DateJust which is available and a true classic.

I hear you on the smart watch (note, I hate smart watches) but I still think purchasing a Rolex for a newborn when you have no idea of the child will ever care or appreciate a Rolex in the future is a nice gesture but there may be better directions to go.

Lol... You're mistaken. He's using the ol' line for the AD.

That's why you buy it to wear with the "undisclosed to n.v the child" intent to pass it on. You can always change your mind that way if it doesn't seem they'd appreciate it.

Its your decision, your watch to do what ever you please. Im sure your kid will appreciate it because you gave it to him even if he doesn't know the monetary value of it
