Called Mayors, asked about servicing, said don't bother

I found this very intersting. My new watch, which is expected tomorrow, is over 7 yrs old and according to rolex, due for service. I called mayors and to my complete surprise, the salesman said, if the watch is running well, don't worry about spending $500+ to get it serviced. I told him i was surprised by his answer since rolex says every 3-5 yrs. He said they can run many yrs beyond that though if it begins acting up, you should bring it in. He clearly wasn't providing the company line, which in some ways i appreciated, in others, i wondered if it was bad advice.

Also, how hard will it be for me to remove a link or two on my new /pre owned gmt? It is made for a 8.5 inch wrist and I need 7.5. Is this a do it yourself job or need to have AD handle?

I have removed links without issue. They are fairly easy to remove. Just make sure to be careful to try and avoid scratches.

Removing links for that model is fairly straight forward. It helps to have a set ofthe small hobby screwdrivers, otherwise it's a piece of cake.

If you were wearing you watch daily then you probably should bring it in after 7 yr.
It may be running well with good time but if you start noticing you don't have as much power reserve as before then you should get it serviced as well.

It can never hurt to have the watch serviced.

x2.

The oils in the watch can dry up and while the watch may appear to be running flawlessly it's actually causing more damage to the gears. I would get it serviced. My watch was fine until about oh 10 hours ago. Everything was working fine, watch hasn't been serviced and is 5 years old and the next thing you know it's now at the Rolex Spa.

That sounds like typical salesman BS from an AD. Take the advice from here or at the very least a qualified watchmaker. Servicing your watch can only help it and prolong its life.

It cant hurt to get it serviced, it can only help. Granted, I let one go without servicing until its date stopped changing. I bought it pre-loved and these were pre-TRF days so I did not even know they were supposed to be serviced regularly. It ran, so I thought all was well. RSC said it was the first time the watch was serviced and it was 20 years old.

I just received a new Plat YM and removed 2 links. To my surprise, the Rolex steel is much stronger than the steel in my watch tools. The band is still perfect even with my fumble-fingered work.

Since you need some links removed, why not have the AD do it when you pick up the watch. Otherwise, I believe the screw driver you need is a 1.6mm!!!

Unless you really trust your AD, I say DIY. I believe that I am better and more careful than the average person at a given AD. There are tons of hacks out there.......even at Rolex ADs. I cringe sometimes watching salespeople/staff handle $5k+ watches at some of these places
