Considering buying a platinum Daytona - help assessing conditiong
Hello everybody, I’m considering purchasing a platinum Daytona from my friend. He says it’s unpolished to his knowledge. He didn’t own it from new. It is his daily and has many many hairline scratches, actually the photos I took look a lot worse than what was seen to the naked eye. I couldn’t feel any deep ones and the lugs still felt sharp etc, as far as I can tell. I personally like my watches without scratches so I would send straight to RSC For a full service and polish.
Also I have no experience with platinum I know that’s it difficult to polish and has to be done properly hence why I’m sending it to RSC, is it polishable to a like new state again? What do you guys think any help assessing condition would be greatly appreciated. Has it been abused? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Due to Platinum's denseness, refinishing shouldn't take much if any metal from it. Perhaps you can put it on a timegrapher to see how the movement is performing?

Unless you're getting an extremely steep discount just get a new one from an AD, the platonas are out there and are not impossible to find.

If you’re going to be wearing this watch (hope you are) I wouldn’t bother polishing. Platinum scratches extremely easily but then over time patinas. If you get it polished within a week the pcls will have hairlines in them.
If you think this one is too scratched up look for another one or as other have said go to the AD. They’re available. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Likely because a Mod didn’t believe it belonged where it was originally. I presume the watch is in GB? You should add £1000 to your implied cost in case an overhaul + parts are needed. Then you’ll be able to also have it polished. My Platona didn’t get all those scratches in normal use so you’d likely have a shiny new toy for quite a while after servicing. Cool watch and I previously owned this model. I found it a bit small, which I knew when I purchased it, but it was fun while I owned it. I moved back to a Platinum DD II. No issues with the scratches as I could live with it if the price of the watch was right. For me it would come down to the deal. If it was right and I wanted the watch then it would be mine. If the deal was not strong then I would go look at a new one or slightly pre-owned one without so much wear. I would also look at a DD40 with one of the super cool dials offered. If you make this purchase, I would just wear the watch for a month or two as is. See if there are any timing issues and then decide on a service/polish. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

Box and papers?
Price? Images are very poor for determining condition.

I agree that it shouldn’t need a service unless you notice anything amiss after buying it. A lot depends on how it was treated in the past. The last thing is to be sure you don’t have a stolen one - that’s where an RSC service quote helps you. Once they look it over for issues, they check a database for reported thefts. No, I don’t have mine anymore - it was stolen in a burglary. Ergo, my point above. If the s/n of the watch you’re considering is 8D705451 then please drop me a PM. I didn’t wear it daily - had I done so the burglars wouldn’t have snatched it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Thanks for all the reply’s everybody. I’m still on the fence.. I’m now happy with the condition and it’ll be going immediately to Rolex for a service. Above poster I will check that’s not the serial number on the watch.
Just have to answer myself a question do I spend that much on a watch ! Ha |

If you're one who's concerned about scratches, I say wear it for a few weeks to get your wrist used to it. Think of it as practice so when you get it back looking fresh, you'll have some experience with it and maybe know to do certain things/movements differently.
