Tudor 79280 Chronograph Date and Dial Font Differences?
I've been on the hunt for a Tudor 79280 Chronograph and just recently pulled the trigger on a non-Tiger Prince Date dial model. I went back to look at the pictures in anticipation and noticed that the date font looks to be bold and sans-serif in style whereas pictures I see online of other 79280 models show thinner serif style date numbers. The font/spacing for other dial text also seems to vary. Does anyone know if they changed date fonts/dial fonts over the years?
The serial number for the one I bought is H6XXXXX which most likely dates it very close to when this model was discontinued (the warranty card is stamped as being purchased in 2009). The one I purchased (sorry for the bad quality, picture is from the seller and I had to zoom in): Example picture (taken from watchvaultnyc website): |

Received some additional photos from the seller and the date font 100% matches a standard valjoux 7750 date wheel font. Did Tudor ever use these or did they always switch to their specific date font? The seller claims he is the only owner, bought it himself from an AD in Hong Kong, and never had it opened or serviced.
I also received the following pictures from the seller, what do you think? The date wheel seems fishy along with the subdials looking curved/bowled around the edges instead of a more flush transition between the subdial and dial. I don't believe these were ever really faked, moreso franken'ed, so this one is leaving me very confused. Standard Valjoux 7750 date wheel (Image from bobinchak.com) |
