Consolidation is an idea I will always support! I do it every once in a while, thinning the herd - and moving upmarket when I get bored with the pieces.
In recent times I have had the problem that I am not getting bored :-P So now the future incomings needs to be cash based...

Mr. Foley,
I’m contemplating doing the exact same thing. My wife doesn’t want me to buy any more watches and suggested I consolidate over next few years from 38 watches to just 10 pieces or less (I’ve been buying an average of 1 per year)... Like the others have said, right now is a bad time to be a seller. But I will share my plan with everyone - sell the 2 most desirable/valuable pieces and say no deal unless you take these other pieces too. For example, I’m selling my AP RO white/silver dial and SS Daytona but making the dealer take in a few Omegas, Vacheron, Panerai, Gerard Perragaux, JLC and Cartier as well, at fair, but not great, prices. To sell one by one is a waste of time and you will not achieve the objective, which to get fair pricing, not fire sale pricing.... |

Hi OP, I did the same thing in February this year, here’s the thread which explains how I dealt with the sale of the watches.

Consolidate or not, I think the biggest mistake would be to buy that Casio for daily wear (unless it has some special meaning to you). You have such great options in your collection already! Sub or Explorer would be my choice, and make fantastic daily watches. Or sub date if you need that. But I just can’t fathom having such a great selection and then moving to a Casio.

I don't think consolidation is a bad thing, though as others mentioned this isn't a great time to be selling off your collection. I don't know how much money is a concern for you, but if it were me selling them individually would be worth it due to the likely large difference in price at this point vs. sending them all to a trusted seller.

I have 22 watches including Rolex from each year of the 50s. I also have Omega from the 50s and other watches. These watches have taken years to find and acquire. I can wear, and sometime do, my vintage watches. I love having them. It is my own museum of sorts. It gives me a greater appreciation of my new watches and being able to hold in my hands some of the history of watches.
They don't take up much room. If I were to sell them, that money would simply evaporate. So I don't see the point. It seems that when people sell off their watches, it is due to some odd feeling that something is wrong with having watches that aren't worn much. Anyway, I don't see the point of thinning the heard unless there is some emotional issue with having the watches, which it seems is the problem. |

I haven’t sold any pieces yet, but I pretty much have a four piece rotation nowadays.

I think most collectors go through this at some point. For me I started to feel like I had “too many” once I got to around 7 watches with just a handful that I always went back to.
At that point I had to really consider what each watch meant to me and why it was in my collection. I enjoyed wearing all of my watches (no safe queens here) but it was apparent when I would only have 1-3 watches show up on my IG on a monthly basis. I’d probably be looking to unwind a handful if my watches just to get rid of the boxes and clear up some space. |

I have owned a total of 50 but never had anymore than 12 in the collection at any one time. I have had peaks and troughs but for the most part only sold in which to trade up whilst downsizing. A recent personal situation has made me revisit the whole watch collecting journey and I’ve downsized from 12 to 10 to 7 and now 5. One will be kept for a graduation, 3 for heirlooms and another will be sold when the market picks up again.
As other have said it’s a bad time to sell but I totally get your logic |

You need some variety, no wonder you’re selling. From afar they all look similar. Get a Panerai or IWC Pilot, with leather strap to mix things up a bit.
