Magnetization

Just curious to know how many of you find your watches get magnetised?
I have need to de-magnetise two this year as they were running erratically. Once de-magnetised they both were back to their normal rate. I suspect its the magnets it the phone and tablet PC case are to blame.

I had an old Date Just from the 80s become magnetized. It's day-to-day time keeping was about +7-15 minutes a day. Since then, I have not had any magnetized.

Maybe there's something else going on, because I'm messing with my phone and other computer related crap all day long too, and I never have an issue.

It’s frankly more rare than you think. The oyster case is pretty solid with or without the cage. In over 20 years I’ve never had a Rolex magnetized and I’ve been through plenty airports .

Older iPad models had strong magnets that one could inadvertently magnetize their watch. This has since been fixed in the later iPads.

I think it might be the magnets in the case for my Galaxy 5 table.

I've never had any of my watches get magnetized and I work around a lot of computers and electronics / electrical systems.

Until recently I didn't even realize the affects it could have on a watch. I came across this video (unfortunately not in English, but I could still understand the point) showing what a magnet can do to a running movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptlbQsLohko

It happened to me once when I was doing some deep spring cleaning and I moved a couple of large Hi-Fi speakers around.

Never happened to me.

But remember, it's enormously unlikely to happen to a modern Rolex anyway. Unless you're wearing vintage (or another brand, of course), you won't have a problem.

Yeah, I tend to agree with this.

I've even heard that the current Milgauss line of watches is immune to magnetic fields that are a lot stronger than 1000 gauss. I haven't found any evidence to substantiate this, but this article hints at it: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/a-...odymium-magnet

Same here in well over 40 years of wearing.

As a toolmaker I am in constant use of magnetic chucks and sine plates, I never had a Rolex become magnetized

I have been wearing a watch since the age of 10 so in well over 55 years of wearing any watch have never had one magnetised, this includes old Timex and other cheaper brands.

Very timely thread. I literally just degaussed my Omega SMP yesterday. Noticed it gained almost a couple of minutes in two weeks. Did the compass test, and it moved the needle.

Haven't had a problem with modern Rolex, though since I have the compass out, I'll test it for fun.

I haven’t had any issues with Rolex, however have had to demagnetise two other watches.
The cause of magnetism was the cover of an iPad case, which has since been removed.
