Sub movement?

After having passed up the offer to buy my first Rolex (Sub date) at the onset of this current pestilence, I'm back on the market.
Is it worth waiting for the new movement (if it comes) or to jump at the first opportunity.

PS. Since this will be my first - I want to get it at an AD

Thanks

Each individual needs to decide if somehow you would get more satisfaction out of a different movement.

I think getting a Rolex, and a Sub in particular is realy th equivalent of getting a 911. Of you want the most advanced get the current or upcoming model. If there’s anything in the history that strikes you, get that one, 2 lines, alu bezel. Just don’t overpay. That’s the ground rule. It’s just a watch. Or car. A to B transport, or dividing 24 hours. Have fun with the decision and hunt,

I hear so much about “movement.” What significance does it have on a new/2020, or two or three year old Submariner? My SS Sub/Date is 15 years old, and it’s fine How can someone tell if there’s a difference? For me, I set my watch, and Check the time. Can someone please explain why is new “movement” so important? Thanks.

No one knows if or even when there may be a new Sub release- if its the watch your heart is set on I would strike at the next opportunity that comes your way. Hope to see an "incoming" post soon

The 116610 SubC Date’s 3135 movement is a tried and true workhorse. Although a more modern movement with longer power reserve, the 3235 that’s speculated to equip a new Submariner isn’t necessarily “better.” In fact, there have been other TRF members who have raised issues with the 3235. Like others have said, the choice is personal.

I’m thrilled with my 116610LN.

If you can wait until next year, I’d wait for the 3235.
In my Sub and DSSD, I’d prefer a longer power reserve.

Rolex could have kept going with the 3135 and no one would have stopped buying watches with that movement. Besides the increased PR, probably other good updates. If you plan on keeping your Sub for 10-20 years more, wait for the 3235.

I'd be waiting on seeing what cosmetic changes they make, rather than the movement. I don't see a need for 70+ hour power reserve etc... I know some people like this as an option and I can see it is beneficial if you have many watches in rotation.

Since buying my 114060 six months ago I’ve had many sleepless nights. I find myself waking up in a cold sweat thinking, “they’re going to put the new movement in the Sub.” I’d wait if I were you.

True. There’s nothing more embarrassing than being the only loser in the room with an antiquated 3135 movement. When I’m trying to pick up ladies I just lie and tell them I have a 3235.

I have both movements. I am happy with both. They're both workhorse, daily driver movements and keep excellent time. I would go with either. I wouldn't wait but if you're unable to pick one up for an acceptable price until the new Sub is released (or at least gets a new movement), I'd just go with a new movement. I don't think the pr is a big deal and the only benefit of the old movement vs new is that the old movement can be service by an independent watchmaker. If you're using RSC, than it's a wash.

I think the question is how long will you be willing to wait. Clearly Rolex isn’t releasing anything new this year. So there will be a fair bit of inventory sitting in new old stock from factory. Not sure what Rolex plans to do about this. I don’t believe much of the current inventory sitting at the factory has sold. I’d guess they have to either sell off the existing stock Or literally keep it and release the newer model. If it’s selling off existing stuff you might be waiting for a while.

Have to agree Bas and being new does not mean its better with a few problems still with the 32 movements.

'IF' they put a new movement in the Sub, how long are you willing to wait?

As with all new Rolex models, the wait times at an AD will be years not months, especially if you dont have any previous history wiith them.

The only difference you would notice is the longer power reserve, but as its your new watch, chances are you would be wearing it every day anyway so this becomes irrelevant really.

If you get chance to buy the current model from an AD now, I would go for it.

Yes, I repair quite a few of them under warranty...

You're over thinking it - buy the Sub / Sub Date now. I wouldn't bother about the new 32 series movement.
As Bas & others have eluded to, the 31 series movement is reliable and any quality tweaks have been amalgamated over an exceptionally long production run.

I have a Ceramic Submariner date purchased in November, 2019 reset to account for Daylight Savings Time on March 8. It is currently running 10 seconds slow without a reset after 2&1/2 months. Given that level of accuracy I wouldn't trade straight across for a Sub with the so called "new movement."

Also, no guarantee on long it will take you to get the submariner with the new movement. If you have the opportunity and are able too, I would get the Submariner Date. I was waiting over a year and ended up being able to get one from the AD, right before everything was shutdown.

The new movement means nothing to me and I might prefer the old movement as it is a work horse. We do not know if and when a new Submariner will be introduced and as such, would take the Submariner offered from an AD. Wear it, enjoy it and when a new Submariner comes along you can review it from afar and see if you want to move on one. My take is no you would not as long as they don't change the case or dial design.

If you don't want to buy a Sub Date at the moment because you are waiting for the possibility of a new movement (which will always happen if you wait long enough), then you don't want to buy a Sub Date. Keep your money and either wait or spend on something you really want.

Agree with this. 3235 is introduced for a reason or Rolex could have kept rocking the old movement; its Rolex’s move to stay ahead of the curve.

I think Rolex developed the new movement as cost saving move. Just look at a 3135 movement and new movement the finishing on the 3135 is a lot more. Pr means nothing to me. Is it that hard to wind and set the time ?
