I guess they want you to report it stolen so you can buy another one.

it seems they should tell you, it could help prevent sales of stolen pieces and notify owners of stolen pieces.
you could try the stolen watch registries though |

You can send your rolex to RSC for "Authenticity" check. (Around $200)
If you get it back, then it's not stolen. You can use the paperwork for insurance purposes. |

You must physically present the watch to the RSC.
If it is not stolen they will tell you so. If it is stolen, they will work with you and the original report authority to ensure that the watch is placed with the proper owner. If there was a place where you could just call up, there would never be any stolen watches recovered.

Doesn’t auction houses, serious grey dealers and pawn shops in the US check their goods? It’s standard practice here.

Several years back I bought a Rolex second hand through Chronos from a shop in NYC (this was back when I was far more naive). It was a black face Daytona 116520 (last model before the ceramic bezel). Once I received the watch I brought it to my AD and asked them to check it out. The movement was legit but the crystal did not have the crown etched into it. I had them send it to Rolex for a new crystal and otherwise to check it out. Two weeks later I received a lawyers letter from Rolex advising me that my watch was stolen and they were retaining it until the matter was sorted out. They did give me the name of the original, rightful owner who I contacted. His home had been broken into a year or so earlier and this watch was stolen. After a bit of back and forth with the shop I bought it from, including having to threaten them that I would contact the NY AG’s office to have all their pieces investigated, they wired my funds back to me and that was that. I don’t know if the original owner received it back. But ever since, I’ve been extremely careful who I purchase a watch from!

You could have the police run it in NCIC. If someone made a police report of it being stolen in the US and provided the serial, it'll be in there.

LEIN should list as stolen. But understand when a watch is reported stolen via police repot a lot of times the person reporting has no record of its ser.num. So just a description is taken then there little chance its ever going be going back to the owner. Rolex will never enter the watch as stolenw/o a serial number. Serial numbers is like a vehicle vin numbers.
