5 digit for 6 digit

hi all, do you think i should swap my 5 digit no date sub for a 6 digit sub with date, in view of the rumours about the sub being discontinued in September and possible price increases in the present day sub

Doesn’t make sense to me. Your 14060 has also been discontinued and is also increasing in value.

Make sure you see and try both on.
I always thought I'd prefer the 5 until I had a chance to try them side by side and to my surprise I preferred the maxi case.
Whatever you do, I would not make a decision on price projection. Just get what you prefer.

I like both the 5 and 6 series but you WILL regret parting with your 14060.

No. He's got the perfect Submariner. The historical design with sapphire and "modern" caliber.

That's my opinion.

If you prefer the look of new watch then get the new watch.

If it is to make a few quid reselling then get in the queue with all the other watch investors on here and then y'all can sell to each other!!

Ah you want to make money and don't care about watches at all.

I think you should sell it for a quartz Cartier.

It's a question only you can decide for yourself.
This forum is divided in its opinions between the 5 and 6 digits, so you're going to get a mixed bag of answers.

Try the 6 digit on, it wears like a completely different watch imo and you may find the maxi case not a good fit for your wrist.

Get the the 6 digit if you like it better..period
Investment value....both will hold value just fine, depending on price paid. As far as owning for that purpose...hopefully you’re not looking for this to be an ‘investment’ at all, none of these are, unless you’re talking ultra rare 7 Or 8 figure pieces.
Get or keep the Submariner you’ll enjoy looking at on your wrist the most

If it’s not about the money then I would say it depends on which one you like better on your wrist. If you are going to keep it then, for me at least, the value is in the owning the watch you want to wear.

An added value to that approach is that you don’t worry about the inevitable dings that come with actually wearing a watch. They become part of your shared story. I have a 16610 that I considered replacing when the maxi came out but that old sub was on my wrist for all of the best dives I ever made. From wreck dives to cave penetrations I’ve banged that thing along rusty bulkheads and rocky restrictions. It’s part of my story now and no one but me can put a value on that.

But then I’m just a hopeless romantic

Watches tend not to serve as investments.

If you can try on the 6-digit to compare, go with whatever one you like better on your wrist.

FWIW, I sold my 14060m after owning it from new in 2009 last year and I did fine on the sale, even when adjusted for inflation. I sold it because it was not getting wrist time and I do not miss it.

No. 6 digits with massive lugs are a hard no. 5 digit marked the sad end for balanced and proportioned watches and the beginning of Rolex putting form and wrist presence above function. Sorry crockery and massive lugs have no place on the most iconic sport watch of all time.

I greatly prefer six digit references to five. I went from a five digit sub to the SubC Date years ago and never looked back. Ceramic bezel, improved bracelet and more contemporary size without over sizing like current Omega divers.

I would get (or keep) whichever fits you better. I think it’s that simple .

6 digit with date will always have more buyers looking for it. The 5 digit and 6 digit subs will always have a smaller Market because they have no date complication. In rotation or WIS I think the preference is a ND. It’s the pure submariner.

In your case being it’s your only Rolex and I don’t know if it’s your daily if it is I would get the 6 digit. Miles ahead in build quality and bracelet. In a deep collection I would keep the ND.

If you are looking for value as in investment the HULK is the submariner you want to buy before it becomes discontinued.
