Hello guys,

I am looking for recommendation for best way to insured mail a Rolex To USA destination.

I sold a watch to a friend and was wondering if Fed Ex is best way. And how do you declare the cost and value etc. Watch is $15k

Unless you have 3rd party insurance (Parcel Pro etc) I would recommend USPS Registered Mail. It’s the mail Rolex recommends and is something you can insure up to $50k. FedEx can be there quicker and the value they ask you is not for insurance purposes - you can take the risk if you do FedEx priority overnight but up to you and the buyer.

AFAIK Fedex will only insure up to $1K

USPS registered, or Parel Pro insured double-boxed FedEx. I prefer the former over the later.

Rolex mailing instructions for sending to service centers states registered mail. It was slow but tracked every step of the way. This is the route I’d recommend.

This. Always within locked cages. Anything else and you are "rolling the dice".

We have seen many horror stories here and at "the other big forum" of watches "disappearing" during transit.

Me -- I use RM and nothing else. (BTW RM is tortoise-slow but you will never mysteriously lose your watch).

Exactly. And you can send Registered Priority if you wish. That is how I sent my Patek for service

I have my watches insured by USAA. I have called and confirmed that they cover the item if it is lost in transit. I just send it fedex overnight

Sold my DAY-DATE recently and was shocked to learn that USPS Registered Mail is really the only safe and secure insured option us normal people can send through. FedEx and UPS will not insure the watch for its full value.

Not 100% sure without reading your policy, but this may only be if you are servicing the watch.

If you sold the watch, received the funds, then are mailing the watch to deliver. You may not own the watch anymore. The buyer owns the watch. (You got the money.) They may not cover a watch that you don't technically own.

Like I said, not 100% sure, but be careful.

Registered mail is painfully SLOW. But also the safest most secure way.

Added benefit to protect the buyer and seller is if either side tries to scam the other, I believe it is mail fraud. Since the transaction involves the USPS. That means a federal offense. That's a big deal.

That's why in a prior job, we had people send documents by mail instead of dropping them off. Another layer of fraud protection. But that was awhile ago... Now most records are sent electronically.

Yeah- it’s a great question. DavidSW selling $100k pieces regularly and shipping overnight. Perhaps they pay for ParcelPro coverage on FedEx priority overnight with every watch?

Or some kind of business policy that covers all the watches n transit?

To lose a 50k-100k piece is a big exposure.

I'd assume they have Parcel Pro or some other business insurance layered on. Otherwise for us normal folks, USPS registered mail is the option available.

I've heard from friends and colleagues they successfully FedEx and UPS overnight insured, but fortunately none of them ever had to deal with a claim.

I checked out Parcel Pro, and it looks like it requires a business to set up, can it be used if you don't have a business?

Does anybody have recent experince with registered mail during COVID-19? Are they still requiring a signature for delivery (because I know fedex isn't)? I'd assume ship time is still slow, but not worried about that.
