Datejust Rotor noise?

Hi

I have a Datejust 41, 2019

When I move the watch from side to side I can hear the rotor spinning quite loud.

Is this normal?

Or do I need to get it into Rolex to be looked at

Thanks guys

The rotor is supported by a ball bearing race. If that is the noise you hear then there is no reason to send it in.

Wouldn’t ball bearings result in a silent rotor? Perhaps the key is the “race” portion, as surely the assembly would be too small for actual ball bearings?

3235 in OPs watch uses ceramic ball bearings. They are known for having more noise than the axle rotor on 3135.

Yes, they are ball bearings.

Sealed roller bearings would likely be silent, but that would be an engineering feat.

3235 is more noisy than a 3135 .More gritty winding too and set the time in reverse ,

Your sub is a 3135 movement. They are much quieter. The DJ41 has the 3235 and it’s quite noisy. So to answer your question. Yes the noise is normal. Nothing to worry about. Wear it and enjoy.

So it begs the question...why? It sounds almost like a step in the wrong direction, aside from the 70-hour reserve. I’ve always found the appeal of a Rolex to be their vault like build quality, accuracy, and being dead silent on wrist.

Interesting stuff!

After almost 7 years my trusty 216570 is now making a rotary sound that I have never heard before, it was serviced probably about 6 months ago so it may need to be looked at again.

Datejust Rotor noise?

It’s normal. 31xx whisper quiet. 32 series have ceramic bearings or something. I find it harder to regulate by position as well compared with the older movements.

Reason I heard is that the earlier bearing, which I believe was just a babbet type, or metal sleeve, would wear and spread junk into the case, and also that if it became worn enough, the rotor can sag down and come in contact with the movement below while rotating, ie more grinding.

I guess the 3135s could go for a while without this happening, and a service fixers it, but this new caged ball bearing setup should eliminate that.

I hear mine every once in a while. Kinda like it.

Sorry I meant to say easier to regulate than the older. Which is a plus.

I always find some reponses laboriously long-winded.

Yes, the noise you hear is the new movement within the latest Rolex models. It is completely normal.
