People pay 100s of thousands for a rust bucket shell... Then pay another 100k plus to restore it. Is it still the same car?

It’s the same watch if the final recipient remains completely unaware of its previous circumstances other than that it was once worn and then handed down by the grandfather.

It’s not the same watch, once the circumstances are completely revealed.

This is exactly what I was thinking about, because I’ve done this.

We had an old rusty car with lots of memories for my wife and I. We then had it restored to better than new condition, which cost a lot of money. It was not the same. It was a new, old car, but it was no longer our old car. I sold it after about a year as all of the memories had gone. Something is only original once.

As someone has already said, the child would be getting the father’s watch, but it would not be the same watch the father bought.
