Adding PM into an SS collection

Hello all. I've been lurking around the forums for a while and have come across some posts regarding how adding PM ruins one's feelings towards their SS pieces. I've seen PM pieces that interest me, but I've been reluctant to go down that road because I currently do enjoy the SS watches that I have. I would like to enhance my collection and wear everything I own, but I do have concerns that I will begin to ignore SS once I experience PM.

A couple of examples if anyone can chime in include adding a 116519 to an existing collection that has a 116500. Both great watches, but a different feel altogether. Do you find that the 116500 gets ignored going forward? Or just adding a PM DD40, WG or PT. Has the warmth and heft made going back to SS uneventful? Any thoughts and experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I went the other way started tt then pm then steel.

a solid gold watch does feel alot more special. but i enjoy the steel pieces just as much. first steel rolex i bought was a 116710LN. still love it when i wear it.

To me Rolex is the king of SS sport watches so I have no concerns that addiction of PM will ruin my enthusiasm and enjoyment of SS models. I love YG Rolex as well, but mostly limited to DD and maybe Daytona.

My first thought is that any new watch to the collection could cause you to ignore your other pieces. If you are considering WG out Pt then you may or may not get the buzz out of owning a PM piece. When you wear these pieces most people will think they are steel so it is stealthy. If you want to get noticed then full YG followed by RG will cause a little more head turning. As far as ignoring SS, I doubt you will ignore your steel pieces because there are times when it's just more appropriate to wear the steel piece and more appropriate to wear the PM piece. Or you can just go for it and wear PM all day everyday.

Its funny to read these posts, I was attracted to a Submariner and my wife actually bought one for my birthday in 1979. I next wanted a TT GMT Master in the early 80s. Then went to a PM Day Date President. I don't ever remember any agenda other than wanting a certain watch.

You can see what I own in my signature block. I had SS and then purchased my 519LN. I've since purchased additional SS. Love them all and wear them all! Maybe a full gold piece would feel different, but the 519LN fits in great!

I had a 116500 and then got the 116505. To be completely honest yes, it ruins steel pieces for me. I just don’t really ever want to reach for them. I sat with my collection for three months to see if my feelings would change as the newness wore off, but it didn’t. I just recently parted with all my SS models (and most of the rest of my collection too, since I just never though much about it after getting the PM daytona).

I added a WG DD to compliment my stainless sports models. Owning the DD does not make me want to own the sports models in PM.

Love to look at the SS, but the PM gets more wrist time in the end for me.

I think if you buy what you enjoy and make great memories with it, you'll always have that soft spot in your heart for those pieces even if they are SS and you start adding PM. There's a place for every watch, so you'll probably always find occasions to return to your SS. If you're starting to feel drawn towards a different metal, style, or brand, go for it! I think it's also a matter of you learning more about the watches you want and coming to appreciate them, which doesn't necessarily mean your appreciation for your current ones will diminish!

Thanks for all the great replies. I can see the mix and match of SS and PM in a collection as long as they are different models. I guess what I also wonder about is getting the same model in SS and PM. For those that have done just that, does one get phased out? I like the 126715 in full rose gold, but I also am very fond of the SS GMT pieces as well. And for those that have the 116500 and added the 116519, did you start to ignore one over the other? Once I find a style I like, I tend to gravitate towards the same watch but in different colors and metals. Probably not the best way to guarantee a consistent rotation of wrist time.

IMO same model watches would be done as long as the PM wasn’t WG. Otherwise to me it doesn’t make a lot of sense unless you really like the PM dial which isn’t avail on an SS model....

The SS are nice to have in the watch box and enjoy knowing you have them. But PM makes it onto wrist more.

I started my Rolex collection with a Sub C 114060. Love that watch and always will. Later in my journey I added a Day Date 18238 and about 6 months ago a pre ceramic gold sub 16618LN.

When I got the Day Date, it quickly became my daily drive even though it was a more dressy watch. At the time my Sub C and Bluesy got minimal wrist time. Fast forward a few years I moved the Day Date on and picked up the Gold Sub. The gold sub is now my daily drive, it gets about 95% of my wrist time.

So did PM "ruin" SS for me? I don't think so, I don't dislike SS, I just prefer PM. For me anyway it has a look and a feel I love. I must admit there are times I think my Sub C has just become a really expensive beater but I put it on and instantly remember why it such a great watch. Post is useless without pics a few of my dearly departed DD and my gold Sub.
