Love of your watch

On seeing a couple of post where some people have purchased a watch and not bonded with it, is there a correlation on what you paid for it ie if you get at mrsp will you be much happier than if you pay over, i got my Bluesy at mrsp so very happy, would i have the same feeling if I'd paid £2k over list don't know.

Of course, it's the well-known psychological phenomenon of buyer's remorse. You're more likely to doubt your satisfaction with something if you spend more for it, all other things equal.

Loads of times, we get hyped up to buy a certain watch because we see too many photos of it. Too many folks posting incomings of a said watch. Especially if it is a “harder to get” watch...and when that happens, we more often than not, order the watch sight unseen. Watches, like shoes, are meant to be tried on before buying as we all have different wrist shapes and sizes. Therefore a watch that looks good on someone else may not look so good on our own wrist. And when that happens, we have what you call buyers remorse.

It doesn’t have to be watches but something you truly love and enjoy cannot be bought for any price.

I don’t truly love any of my watches so I prefer to get a discount. I’d never pay over for any of them, if I missed the boat, then that’s life.

I think there is a difference between truly love and love.

Myself personally would love or hate the watch depending on the watch itself and not what I paid for it. After a few years you tend to forget how much you paid. That said I wouldn't pay silly money above the MRSP anyway.

I'm not sure it's related to how much you paid for it. Rather I think people go for the "hot" models and fall in love with giant close up pictures of watches on the internet which really give no sense of what it will look like on their wrist. Then they get intoxicated with "the chase" to aquire these hard-to-get models. When they finally obtain these models and for the first time get to spend a day or two on the wrist, the high begins to wear off and buyers remorse begins to set in. Once the thrill of the chase ends reality comes around and they start realizing maybe the hot model wasn't quite the perfect choice for their wrist. It's a pattern repeated over and over on here. People need to learn to buy what's right for them, not whatever is hot and hard to obtain on the internet.

There is a constant theme of cost on TRF and it does play into what we own and how we shape our watch buying and owning experiences. For many it is about the deal and I have watch friends who like to brag about what they paid and what a great deal they got. No issues with that, but I think that, like life, you have to find balance. Getting to buy the watch you want is nice. No matter what you pay if you are good with the number and really like the watch. There is not a character flaw with people who pay more or buy from the Grey Market to skip the current situation at AD's, their choice. Just like I support those that will not pay over retail and will only deal with AD's. Okay, it is about the watches and doing what works for you. The other thing is appreciating our fellow members choices even if they are not the ones we would make. This is a hobby and about watches and having fun or at least it is to me.

I have been lucky in that all my Rolex watches have been bought from AD and with little to no wait. Mind you this was 2018 so slightly different time, no wait for sub/DaytonaC/dj36 but had to wait 2 mo for a TT DJ with diamonds (go figure right, the real world is opposite of forum login lol).

If I paid above for any of them, I would still love them equally because of what they mean to me.

When (not if) I go grey and pay over, I don’t think I’ll bond with the watch any less.

But I think the key for me is to not impulse buy.

I'm in love with them before I buy them. If I stay in love with them for long enough before I buy them, I will pay the going rate which might be MSRP, more than MSRP or less than MSRP. It doesn't matter really. I don't want possessions that are popular and hype driven by strangers, just those I adore. If something is out of my price/sanity range I will still love it. But everybody draws the line somewhere.
