41mm Rolex Case
Just went out to an AD during lunch, and decided to try a few watches on.
I must say that I was not impressed with the DDII. The size was really overwhelming, just like I thought in the pictures. It was really humungo and not my fit at all. It was also however, very heavy and pleasant to hold, not to wear. However, I have never felt that way about the submariner. I felt that the sub actually fit my 6.5" wrist very well. So for all you people out there who may feel bad that Rolex came out with a DJII and has "feminized" our 36mm, TRUST ME, the 36 is a timeless classic, just like we always thought, and will ALWAYS be a men's size. This new 41mm case diameter thingy is just a fad that's going to quickly fade. This AD also told me that they have never ever sold one yet since taking delivery of these DDII last year, dont see why they would lie to me about that. |

They are not "feminizing" the 36mm DJ, it's officially the women's model according to Rolex. The flower-dial that came out isn't the only women's model, the whole line got revamped.
The men's model got beefed up to 41mm. Rolex really dropped the ball on this one. |

I was disapointed when i held the larger DDII myself, and my first thougth was i hope this doesnt devalue my current Day date. But the thing was FUGLY to put it mildly they should have at least fluted that giant bezel, it looks so bulky like that. my 2 cents.

I think if you are going to buy the flagship Rolex line, it should be a big hefty gold watch. They did that exactly. |

I've tried on several DDIIs, and prefer the 36mm DD. But of course, others may prefer the reverse.

I would never consider a 36mm DD (too small for me) so I was happy to see the 41mm models released. Sadly, once I got my hands on them though I was less than impressed. Sure, I great watch, but as some of you say, it didn't "smile at me." Considering the prices, I guess I should be happy.

Yea the whole big watch craze is overblown. I've owned a few DJs and currently have the 2007 model. I looked at new 41mm DJs and no way does it even interest me. It seems wrong in size.

It's all in the eyes of the beholder. IMO the DJII and DDII are an attempt to cater to the current fad. Some may like them and that's fine with me. I just prefer the classic 36mm.

You couldn't put enough diamonds on a DDII to dress it up enough for me to buy.

When I was at the AD today, he took out a new gold DD41 to look at (tagged at $27,500). It's a big piece of metal for sure. Even the AD said that it looked wrong to him. The fluted bezel reminded me of a big flower~ He thinks it's going to be a flop. But if I liked it, he would sell it to me - LOL.

There is nothing classier than a 36mm DJ or DD that is fitted to a person's wrist (not dangling). As long as your wrists aren't huge! If they are then the DJII or DDII are for you, just wear it with confidence and proportion it to your wrist.

I have had both, and I'm sold on the DD II.Look at it this way, it is about the same size as a GMT II-c or a Sub,and we all wear them and don't consider them too big. Personally I feel the 36mm DD was small on my wrist,so whe Rolex introduced the DD II I jumped on it(last Saturday)! Bill

I prefer the classic 36mm. And its funny, until this whole oversize watch thing came about, I hardly ever heard people complain that the 36mms were too small or feminine.

No denying that the DDII is beautiful. To say otherwise - who are we kidding? If the price was the same for the DD and the DDII, who wouldn't want the DDII. Fact is- it's pricey- and thus not for everyone. Envy? It is Rolex quality through and through.
For the old ladies among us who are losing eyesight, the size makes it easier to read even if we are 90. Of course you wont be able to lift your arm to get a closer look because if the hefty weight--- So why not just get one of those lovely wall clocks. Better yet- see this photo from an exhibit in Lensburg near Zurich...what we all need- a room full of clocks...

If you're spending that kind of money, I doubt the customer would worry too much about the price difference. And since it has not been a success among the various AD's I've asked, I'm pretty sure they'll give a hefty discount to get them moved out

Not to compaire, but when Panerai makes a 44MM watch, not only are you getting a larger case you are getting a larger dial as well. I would be more impressed if Rolex had done the same. I still can see everyones draw to it because it is new, but for size alone? I do not get it.

With all this 36mm talk I just had to take my DJ TOG out of the safe. (put the YM 40mm back)
If the DD and DJ II would have been proportioned like the 36 I might buy one. But not so If and when I buy a DD it will be 36mm. Btw , 36 is still a normal men's size and Rolex does not say otherwise. It just stated that the new "flower" DJ is for women. Some (many?) years ago Rolex launched the Daytona in a lot of feminine colors. Pink, light green and others. In the press release it mentioned it to be the ultimate ladies watch or something along those lines. Do we consider the Daytona a ladies watch because of it ? |

In their Basel press release, Rolex describes the specific new references they're releasing. They refer to the new "resolutely feminine version" of the 36mm Datejust, but I don't see any official claim that all 36mm Datejusts are the "women's model." |
