Is new always better?

Eh - no, but I acknowledge some people herein wants the improvements - but I like the more traditional size, proportions and materials. :)

Here represented by a 12 year old 5-digit 16618LB used quite so often.

I concur. 1xxxx > 12xxxx > 11xxxx. The new models are a big improvement but for me they don’t trump the 5 digits.

No, I feel quite attached to the maxi case. The new style doesn’t do it for me yet, maybe once I see them live I change my mind.

Beautiful watch. I tend to agree. I’m sure about 20 people will be here in a minute commenting about tuna can clasps, and how scratch resistant ceramic is, and to each their own really. In my opinion however the 5 digit models, especially around the early 2000s were really Rolex at its peak. It retained all we came to love about the brand and all the predecessors of them and just improved them with minimal aesthetic changes.

Said this in another thread, but I think going used is a great option for reasons beyond one's preference for 5-digit vs. 6-digit (and now 6-digit v.2, etc.)- you can get phenomenal watches that are older but still very current for considerably less money, and get a feel for what you truly covet, while waiting for those new targets to hopefully come your way eventually (assuming you don't just decide you love the older models better!).

I don’t know what’s “better “, but I know that’s a beautiful watch (and great photo).

16610lV. Kermit - with a K. Same form factor as the 16618LB.

That mix of colours, the gold, the deep, deep blue, is ancient Egypt, the mask of Tut-Ankh-Amen, where silver has no place among them.

The quality of the watch is the same when it comes to timekeeping and dependability. The rest is subjective - which do you like better? I wore a 14060 for almost 20 years and now I wear a 114060 because I now prefer the solid bracelet and glide lock clasp, but that’s not to say that it’s “better”.

New is not always better. I prefer the 40mm subs. I also like the Kermits more than the ceramic incarnate. I also like that LB posted by OP. And speaking of OPs, I prefer the 39mm black/white OPs to all the new horrible colored ones.

I'm too young to be this grumpy!

Not always no. I do love the 5 digit.

Part of the issue some people have is they listen to too many people on the internet talk about the bracelet and clasp. In my opinion it’s way overblown. They’re still wonderfully made and will outlast most of us.

It’s unfortunate that people will dismiss something without ever even trying them on, but that’s good news for those who appreciate the older classic models.
