The fat lugs maxi case has been the biggest design success Rolex has ever implemented. Never before as with this model have we seen such a craze on sport models of any watch brand in the world.

What a mistake to change it to the new 41 fat slim lugs

I’ve never been a fan of the fat lugs, but the Sub was a huge hit so don’t think Rolex are trying to cover anything up.

The new lug size gives a much better look, and the 41mm diameter size probably suits the overall dimensions of the watch better, giving a more balanced look overall.

I’m not in the market for a Sub, but I think they’ve improved it significantly.

Nothing new about different case shapes and maxi-dials. Some vintage Subs had these, as did the 5-digit LV. Some early Subs were 37mm with Explorer-type dials and no crown guards. I'm not sure what people are attempting to 'prove' here. Different generations of Subs are quite different, yet retain instantly recognisable characteristics. Some people prefer particular references, some like them all - no need for divisiveness.

Agreed. It's a dive watch, not a dress watch. It's not supposed to look "elegant." If you want elegant, look for a gold JLC UltraThin on a leather strap or one of the hundreds of other dress watch choices out there.

That said, I like the looks of the new sub but I love the 40mm that I currently own, too. I haven't had the new one on wrist yet but I'm betting I'd be hard pressed to see or feel a difference.

The last decade Sub was a success because of the improved bracelet and ceramic bezel, not because of the fat lugs. The last decade Sub was a success despite the fat lugs. The fat lugs created a boxy look much different from all previous classic Subs. Take away the fat lugs and it's the same watch just with classic Sub proportions and it will outsell the last Sub because of the improved looks.
