I have everything I need
If you have the privilege of reading this forum, it's very likely that you do, too. Not to take away from the fun of it all, because this is certainly a fun hobby. But I have to remind myself of just that - this is a hobby.
Like it or not, there is a psychological component to the current climate of Rolex. Few, if any, of us buy watches for their utilitarian purposes. We buy them because we want them. And that's totally fine! But the lack of accessibility to SS references from ADs to the high market prices asked by resellers and gray dealers creates a strong desire for what we can't have. We all (should) know that these SS references are mass produced, but the lack of availability of them from ADs and the high market prices gives us the illusion that they are rare and this increases their perceived value. One member recently started a thread saying he just purchased two SS references in the last couple weeks and is considering a third soon. Suspecting their market prices to continue rising, he justifies his purchases by saying that he will get them all eventually and that he may as well get them now before they do. If he can afford it, bravo and congrats. I started to think the same way. I've been searching for a black dial 16520, but I only recently took delivery of a 16710 a few weeks ago. And then I started asking myself why I want the 16520. There are many reasons that I won't get into now. But luckily, my desire for it was curbed by putting on my 16710 and 116710 this week and realizing that these two bring me plenty of joy still. Do I still want a 16520? Absolutely! Will I turn one down if offered at a (what I consider) reasonable price? Heck no. But I will stop, at least temporarily, obsessing over it. I will not let FOMO dictate my purchases and force me to pay (again, what i consider) inflated prices. That said - if you've got the money and buying watches makes you happy, certainly don't let anyone on the interwebz stop you! Do you! /rant Now for some Pepsi porn because every thread is better with a picture. |

I hear ya. I was lucky enough to get my 116610 back in Jan. It’s the piece I’d been saving for and had wanted for years. Would I like my watch to have the new movement, sure. But you know, I wear it every day, so it doesn’t make much difference to me. As far as dimensions, if you can tell the difference between the old and new at distance, you might need help...even for a trf member. There may be another piece I would like to get someday, but as of now, the new sub is nice, but I’m perfectly content with what I’ve got.

Great post OP, it's really easy to get caught up in trying to get the latest and greatest (I know I definitely do) as opposed to being happy with our current collection. Often boredom is remedied with a quick strap change!

Great write up, thanks, I fully understand what you are saying.
More then 30 years I wear the crown and this brand will always be my number one. That aside, the way this (Rolex) hobby last years is developing (all issues included) does not give me the pleasure it always did. Hopefully the tide will turn......

I applaud the restraint in not picking up another watch 'just because you can' when you're already enjoying some fine watches!
Question on the Pepsi porn pair - always curious when I see someone with both. Did you get the Tudor and then later find the budget to upgrade to the 'big brother' Rolex version? Or did you have the Rolex and decide your life as a hobbyist would probably be improved by seeing how the newer Tudor model with the same colour scheme and a bigger/thicker case stacked up? Or just get the second one by accident of circumstances e.g. an inheritance? If the thrust of the thread is 'we have what we need and no need to stress about what we don't have', I'm always interested why people end up with duplicates and overlaps, other than that first world problem of 'well, this money won't spend itself' :) (Yes I know that having pepsi GMTs from two brands isn't outrageous given there are people with five different vintages of black bezel subs...) |

I picked up the Tudor at a time I could not (and still can't) find a BLRO at a price I am comfortable with. So I "settled" for the Tudor. The Tudor sufficed for awhile, but it never really scratched the itch. My quest for the BLRO continued but I just couldn't pull the trigger at the market prices. I then ventured into 5-digit references with a birth year 16710 and couldn't be happier. From the brighter aluminum bezel to having interchangeable bezel inserts to the slimmer profile and lighter weight, I think I made a great choice with the 16710. So why keep the Tudor? Well, I wasn't planning to initially. I thought it might be redundant. But I think what keeps it in my collection and rotation is its more subtle bezel (I tend to wear the 16710 during the day and the Tudor GMT at night) and modernity. If by some miracle the ceramic BLRO ever comes down to a price I'm willing to pay, then I will let the Tudor go in favor of it. |
